BD-R locks up between files

ckelly33

Question

I am experienceing a problem that I wasn't a few months ago (the last time I burned movies). I captured HDV movies from a Sony camera to my PC via firewire. The first thing I noticed was that when I used the "add movie" button, each came up as a separate file in the media window (as it had before) but each also produced a separate timeline and therefore had to be worked on separately (instead on as one large conjoined file). This caused a couple of issues with creation that I didn't recall before.

First of all, chaptering each movie had to be done separately leading each one to start at chapter 1. After trying to rework them into one large conjoined file, I gave up and just used the menu to link to the chapters I had made. I burned the disc and the menu came up when I played it. I chose "Play All" ad the disc started fine.

Here's where the problem came in: at the very point of the seam between file#1 and file#2, playback froze and was completely unresponsive. I powered off and played the disc again, this time from the menu I chose to continue with the movie beyond that particular "seam". It locked up and never left the menu. I powered down and went to bed.

What am I missing here?

BTW, I burned onto a BD-RE using DVDit Pro HD (ver 11a) and Windows Vista and played it on a Panasonic DMP-BD30. It looked GREAT until I hit that "seam". Is there anywas to splice those files togetther (or add them in a different way) so that the timeline is one large file/timeline, rather than having to work all three separately?

Demuxed content wouldn't be of much use to me (isn't that where you import the video WITHOUT the sound & vice versa?). To be honest I wouldn't even know where to begin to do that - other than looking it up in the help menu.

How would that help/isolate the problem anyway? Also when you import separate files, are you getting the same complete separation/inability to merge the files into one as I am getting?

Thanks.

When you import the separated video/audio, you can place them back together in the title window by dragging the video to the video track and the audio to the audio track.

Like I said its a shot in the dark.

Have you tried using a playlist?

Sounds like a very strange bug, when you import your clips are the files demuxed? If not try importing the clips demuxed and see if that helps (just a shot in the dark)...

how are you connecting all of your pieces of content? I would just drag them each onto the content tree in the titles area and then when "movie 1" is selected in that tree, go into it's "movie attributes" and set it's end action to "movie 2" etcetera down the line. Then from your menu button you simply point to "movie 1" (making sure your return to menu override is shut off) and it should play each piece of content in succession. How did you do it?

One other question. When working with three separate movie files and combining them into one larger project, is there not a way to make all three files into one large timeline? Everytime that I have tried I get three separate timelines (they are approx 45", 15" and 60" instead of the combined 120"). I've tried to add them to playlist but that doesn't do it either.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I open the program, click ok on the New Project window that pops up, at the top of the movie window I click on the "Add Movie" icon and pick movie one, then I add movies 2 & 3 the same way. I change the "General" setting of each file so that one follows the other and yet still I cannot achieve a single timeline.

A playlist will not make them physically one file but you can have it play as if it was one file. What type of file are you working with .mpg/.avi? There are applications that will merge files into one that you may want to check out. Or have your editing app merge the files.

Here's what I have done:

1. Open DVDit Pro HD

2. Click 'File" then 'Add Movie"

3. I select my 1st movie

4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 to add in the 2nd & 3rd movies

5. I'm using the "advanced" window view. In the top left corner I highlight Movie 1 in the Titles window and in the lower right window (Movie Attributes) I choose Movie 1's End Action to be "Movie 2:Movie 2" and Movie 2's to be "Movie 3:Movie 3" and Movie 3's to be "Stop".

With that done - and before I go on and chapter it up and insert the menus - the timeline shows 3 separate movies: 45 mis, 13 mins and 58 mins respectively. When I chapter, each begins at 'Chapter 1". This leads me to my first question: can I not create a continuous and seamless timeline to workwith/chapter instead of 3 separate ones?

6. For expedience sake, I placed just a single chapter about 5 secs prior to the end of each movie - in order to view each transition.

7. I chose to simulate and had First play set to movie 1. (as a sidenote, my first attempt locked up the program causing me to start over)...it also locked up on my second attempt. It is showing no video, but I can hear it playing audio and NO controls respond - leading me to shut it down using Vista's Task Manager. I restarted my computer and tried all over again. Same thing.

What's the deal? my version # is 6.3 6311a

BTW - in the movie attributes window each movie is set to "Play Next Title in List". Also, it is not just the disc or the player because sometimes (but not every time) the same lock up happens in "Simulate"
