Ext drives broken by Security Update 2007-009 v1.1?

starford

Question

I've been duplicating an audio project (an original recording) onto an external drive for the past few days, and in the middle of it Apple releases the update to a Security Update. I faithfully install this along with all others, and now all of a sudden I can't the project to burn to the external drive.

The burn will start up, the drive will spin up to high speed, I see all the messages from Toast up to DAO: Burning Lead In and the project just stalls in that state forever. Aborting 10 minutes later (should take 1 min to burn) has no effect. Turning off the drive yeilds a 'communication channel unstable' message. Reboot clears it all out. :angry2:

Here's the details:

Ext drive: Lite-On LH-20A1H in a MacAlly ext case (FW & USB2, using FW)

App: Toast 8.03 retail

Media: Verbatim LightScribe CD-R v1.2

Project: 9 audio tracks totaling 28 min

I've burned this project 15 times successfully from Toast to the Lite-On drive. Now I come back to it, and I'm pretty certain that the only change is this Apple update.

Burning this same project on the internal, crummy Matshita drive (iMac) works properly. Burning LightScribe labels from DiscLabel to the Lite-On works properly.

Anyone else?

This might not work in your case but the usual fix to odd Firewire or USB problems after an incremental system update is to download and apply the combined system update on top of the existing system. Maybe it will work here, too. It does no harm.

How about using TimeMachine to back out of the latest "Apple update"? Another option would be to reinstall the OS from your Apple DVD on a separate FW drive or partition.

later...
