how long should drives last with min. to med usage?

The dvd came installed with the computer, would the diagnostic software be within the OS discs that came with the computer, or embedded in a program on the computer?

If I can play a dvd through the drive, does that mean the drive is ok, or still an issue with writing means the dvd has had it? I did just write a dvd last week, but maybe that was the last hurrah..??

How long should they last? May as well ask 'how long is a piece of string?'

It varies - I've seen ones last for years, others for less than 12 months. One big factor is heat - as the working gubbinses are all plastic, if it's sitting over a hard drive, they warp and lose accuracy and die a death

The reading uses lower power and will quite often continue to work after the writing end has expired - some drives will continue to write to CD, but won't write to DVD (different laser)
