What are aproxy wave files and why are they so large?

Loneriver

Question

I use Windows Movie Maker to capture .wmv files. I then use EMC10 MyDVD to add chapters and burn to DVD. I was able to burn about 3 or 4 successfully but now am getting "not enough space" errors. I had these errors previously and was able to fix it by deleting temp files, cleaning the computer, and defragmenting it. Those steps are not working now.

I searched my computer for large files I could get rid of and I found 3 files that are over 500MB each that are residing in my Roxio folders:

aproxy_solorio 1995 april-july.wmv.wav

aproxy_solorio dec 1996 - may 1997.wmv.wav

aproxy_solorio_1995.wmv.wav

These names (minus the "aproxy_" and the ".wav") are the names of the captured videos. They look like temp files to me. Does anyone know what they are, why they are accumulating, and if I can delete them?

Every time I create and burn a DVD I move both the .wmv and the .dmsd files off my c: for storage elsewhere so I don't see why I couldn't delete these proxy files to recover some space.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help. I already had deleted the temp files and defrag'd the drive. I originally had 15.5GB free. After cleaning, deleting, and defragging I now have about 17GB free. Still failed. I am going to try another disk.

Don't forget to look in the folder where you save your video projects. The files add up there also. Look for old dat files, old mdss slide show versions, old mpg2's that you are sure you don't need anymore, etc. These are not temp files. You may want to conside buying an external hard drive and archive the files to it.

How long in time is your video production? Maybe the error message is referring to "not enough space" on the DVD.

They are built, when you open your production in VideoWave or MyDVD. In either program, you can delete them by clicking on Tools/Options, then Clear (to the right of Proxy).

Adding to what Bruce has recommended in his post. You should also defragment you hard drive frequently and do a general clean-up of temp files. How much free space to you have on your hard drive? If you are running into space problem by having only those 3 temp files on your hard drive it is definitely time to get a larger hard drive, perhaps an external one even. When doing video work it is recommended to have at least 10-15GB free drive space.
