Trouble finalizing

BWE

Question

How much space is required to finalize a data CD? When I try to finalize I get an error indicating there is not enough free space available to finalize the media. Is there anything I can do at this point that will finalize the disc? Since there is only one file involved, I can't just remove a file to make more space and try reburning. And even if that was possible, I wouldn't want to keep removing a file and wasting discs until I found out what the magic number of megs is that is required to finalize. Thanks for any help offered.

Finalizing a disc is important if you have burned a mp3 disc for a car stereo!

Most car stereo's won't play the MP3 disc if it is left Open!

Thanks!

Don't Know!

But I am not sure it matters too much. I have never seen a single posting where anyone ever had a problem accessing a Data Disc because it was not Finalized…

XP & Vista Burning do Session writing and offer NO way to Finalize them.

You did not say if it was R or RW media? RW is not permanent media so it won't matter as the disc won't even be readable after some years… Just a little FYI.

The Session info disappeared somewhere through the years. First Session uses 13mb to 15mb of overhead. Each Session after that uses about 10mb for overhead. (I am not 100% sure this overhead loss is properly reported)

I would suspect you need at least 10mb but I always Finalized mine when they were within 100mb of capacity.

For your current discs, there is no reason you cannot load everything into Classic and burn a new disc that is set to Read Only. 2 drives would make that very easy, but copying the contents to the HD first would be a solution.

You never mentioned it was for an mp3 player before this post…

Use Music Disc Creator, the right tool for the job, and your problems are over.

Classic is for Data and Data only.

Rudy was rude and hijcked this thread. What he said was true but had nothing to do with the original poster's question.

I am trying to finalize a disc I burned using Roxio Creator and the Data Disc option. The disc is a standard 700mb CD. Roxio indicated that there was 3mb of space left when I added the file to the project. Which apparently is not enough space to allow subsequent finalizing. All settings for the project are the defaults provided by Roxio. Not sure what other information might be pertinent. When I look at the properties of the file I'm adding to the disc, it is listed as: 699 MB (733,302,784 bytes) both in "Size" and "Size on Disc". When listed on the WIndows Explorer page it shows the size as 716,116KB. In any case, Roxio successfully writes it to the CD and I can view it successfully from the disc after it was burned, but since it is not finalized, it is not readable in all the drives it should be. When I try to view the file in some drives, I am told I need to insert a disc, as the drive does not recognize it since it is not finalized. Hence my question, how much space does Roxio require to finalize. If it needs 5mb then I will know not to burn discs that don't have at least that much free space remaining. If it takes 10mb, then I know I'll need 10mb. I'm kind of surprised it takes any space really. I've never run into this issue with previous software. So anything info people can share with me is appreciated.
