EMC 10 - None of the programs start.

Dallas8523

Question

I upgraded from emc9 to 10. It worked fine for a while. Now when I click any of the program icons the application does not load. I do not receive an error message. When I tried going directly to the program within Program Files I get the same results. I saw many similiar problems reported in the discussion groups but they seemed to have an error message.

This exact problem happen when I first upgraded. After spending a entire day trying figure out what was wrong I did a complete uninstall including following the directions on cleaning up the registry. That time it corrected the problem.

Now I have it back. What is going on with version 10. Is there a fix for this mysterious problem.

I am running XP service pack 2. The machine is an HP dual core 6600 with 2 GB of memory.

Well, here is your third responder to this problem that can back up what is being said here. I have EMC10, I am getting the same results, and here is the bell ringer: I have Norton Systemworks 2003, and once the registry cleaner runs, I'm dead. System: Home built, ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, AMD 6000+, 2gb 6400 memory, 1650 pro video W/512, XP Pro w/all updates (this didn't seem to cause my issues, as all updates were made on a fresh install just before I got EMC10 for Christmas). It worked until NORTON...

I must say that I like the way the program runs over my copy of EMC 7.5 on this same system--when 10 runs. Smooth and clean. By the way, before anyone says anything, 7.5 was NOT on my system when I installed 10. Remember, I nuked my drive before the EMC 10 instal for other reasons.

Run WinDoctor, and when you get to the end, click Next, or whatever, then on the Active X entries listed, right click, and click on Problem Details. Go down to the entry shown, in the thread that you just read, right click on it, and select ignore.

It is then ok to get rid of the rest of those entries.

What's amazing is that this is just another of many, many posts on this topic and the answer is always that it is Norton Systemworks (or McAfee or other registry cleaner) that is at fault. While the documented work around does seem to take care of the problem, of the 20 or so other significant programs I have installed, no other is crippled by running a mature registry cleaner. Yet, the blame never seems to be at Roxio's feet but always on the other program.

However, now I am sure I will be spammed as a Norton lover!

It's amazing that every time that some one posts about Norton or McAfee breaking the software, you keep posting the same BS.

For the person having the problem, it doesn't matter if it is the registry software program, or Roxio, that is the problem. It is a problem, and there is a fix.

(XP Home SP2)

I successfully installed EMC10 in Nov... BUT as with many folks it stopped working after a week or so & had to be uninstalled/reinstalled... BIG PAIN !!!

i know that folks are pointing to Norton & other registry cleaners... but i don't think that this is my problem...

HOWEVER... i noticed that each time this happened my computer was VERY slooooowwwww.

So... this worked for me...

i hope that it helps other folks...

press Alt-Ctrl-Del...

click Processes tab

find 'wmiprvse.exe'

STOP the process...

i betcha that for at least some of you a bunch of instances of EMC & perhaps other seemingly 'inactive' programs will run... close them down...

EMC will now run ok... at least it did for me!!

Hope this helps !!

David
