cant create music dvd

petruspjs

Question

I have tried several times to create a music dvd but each time I have got the message 'an error has occurred and the program must be shut down'. This has varied between 18% and 45% through the burn - up until today. As a person was advised elsewhere on this forum I updated my graphic card drivers and tried again today. Things looked very hopeful when the 50% mark was crossed. However the same message popped up again at 54%.

Has anyone any ideas for what's happening? I havent updgraded the firmware on my dvd writer yet but it has successfully burnt a dvd video with the current firmware.

I am using an Athlon 3400 chip running at 2.2ghz with 1gb of ram running XP sp2. The dvd writer is a HL-DT-ST-DVDRRW GWA-4161B.

I added one album to the 15 which worked and got a positive result. I am warming to the rogue song theory! Next step might be to add one or two more and see what happens.

Since the last hopeful message I have tried many variants of 17+ albums and not got one of them to work. When I tried 18 it failed on a particular song I took out that album but now it fails elsewhere. I have come to the conclusion at present that this is a procedure which usually fails but just every now and then works.

I also played on a non computer dvd player the worked 16 album disc which played sometimes OK and sometimes with dropouts in one channel and sometims distortion. All in all this is not a procedure which seems to do what it says on the tin.

Well if the Repair failed, you go straight to Clean Install!!!

You cannot have software that is partly installed or partly repaired!

Clean Install

Sorry I meant next burning failed at around 17% - repair install completed. One more thing might be worth mentioning which I hope doesnt sound too strange. Just before the program must shut down message there is a distinctive louder hard disc noise.

I use a DVD-RW

Your PC came with this drive HL-DT-ST-DVDRRW GWA-4161B. It seems to be a OEM only drive?

If so, look to them for a firmware update for your drive.

Then try a -R or +R Verbatim DVD instead of the DVD-RW media.

Why don't you create a new project about half that size and burn to file and see what happens

If it errors it could be one of the song is corrupt and killing it. Although I would expect an error message rather then a program shut down!

Thanks for your suggestion. I started by just burning one album and that worked fine. I suppose my problem with it being one song causing the problem is that it fails at a different point each time. However given it's twice recently got past 40% I will reduce the number of songs by 60% and see what happens (and report).

I guess the thing to do is to add extras in increments until it fails - which is theoretically OK as I use a DVD-RW. Although I wonder if there is degradation when the same one is used repeatedly.

I dont want to be complacent but the (fairly mild) noise I am talking about is one that I have heard before under other circumstances. Nevertheless I am overdue by a couple of days a copy of data to external disc drive which I'll do.

When you say albums of known quality I am not exactly sure what you mean. Perhaps what I need to do is to redo the 15 albums which burnt OK (the only time music dvd creation worked apart from just burning 1 album) . I suspect that these will not always burn OK but hopefully I'm wrong. Then I can add one album at a time. The other option is to try a different 10 , see if I can get them to work then burn 25 made up of the 15 and the 10.

Happy to report that I was able to successfully burn a music DVD last night which was 40% of the size of the old one. I also burnt at 2x instead of 4x. I could try overnight to burn the bigger file at 2x - I'll try tonight.

Thanks for your suggestion. However I have been trying for some time to burn a disc image so that any dvd drive problems are eliminated. DVD firmware issues might I guess explain why the last successful burn had some distortion and loss of chanel but not the program shutdown issue that most of my attempts have been afflicted with.

The original burn failure was creating a music dvd of 35 albums. The successful one had 15. Since burning the successful one I have had failures with attempting to burn 25 and 20. Clearly something is still wrong and it's unlikely to be song related as the failure seems to be a different point each time. The way things stand at the moment I would do just as well to create a WMA CD as that can hold around the same number of albums. Anyone else had experiences using the music DVD writing feature?

That is scary! – I had one HD give me 3 days of noisy warnings before it failed! Only an IDIOT would ignore those warnings! Sign over my desk says "I am an idiot"

While is should not be directly related, consider replacing the HD before you lose everything.

Did you try building a large project based on repeating Albums of known quality?

While it is unlikely that 'size matters' there is one consideration… Athlons are noted for overheating which could cause errors.

Personally I doubt that is the problem.

I am not clear if you are trying to burn directly to disc from your project or following the recommendations we all make about burning to file, then burning to disc? (just works better and separating the tasks helps troubleshooting)

It could still be a song or songs that have a problem… You have that batch that worked, if you keep reusing the same songs until you create a huge project it will confirm size vs quality.

I would first go into Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs, choose Roxio and select Repair.

Then try the 2 step burning route.

Thanks again for replying - very grateful. I have generally been burning to disc so this time burnt to file. When this failed at 25% (this was the 20 album burn) I did a repair on EMC10 (rather a convoluted procedure..might have been as quick to do a new install). Unfortunately this failed at around 17%. I am at a bit of a loss as to where to go next....unless there is a chance that a start up program/anti virus prog (I use anti vir) is causing a conflict.
