mydvd or videowave?

ilana

Question

hello,

i have been reading through this message board for many hours for help and advice as my camcorder is a recent purchase.

i have captured one of my mini dv tapes as an avi file using normal mode in roxio media import in emc9. does it make sense to use mydvd or videowave for editing this file to burn on a dvd?

the dvd specs i have in mind: (1) dvd would be a collection of my short home video clips (my clips are of my daughter and family events), (2) i am not interested in adding music or still photos, just the basics for now, (3) want a main menu with chapters for each of my video clips (or, a chapter for a group of a few video clips), (4) would have about 10 chapters (home videos) per hour/dvd, (5) want text on the screen to introduce each chapter, (6) want a transition between chapters

thanks much for your advice and direction!

best,

ilana

Use VideoWave to put your text, etc. into the production. If you are going to want text to introduce a chapter then, in VideoWave, insert a color panel at that point, and put your introduction text on that panel.

Once you are done with your editing, save your production, close VideoWave, open MyDVD, bring in your production for creating menus, chapters, and burning.

thanks for the info and quick reply.

does mydvd allow for editing (adding titles, transitions, etc)? i am new to videomaking and i thought i could do everything with one program (emc 9), yet it sounds like most everyone on this site uses videowave to edit and mydvd to burn a dvd. (i don't have videowave but will definitely buy it if it makes sense). what program is everyone using to capture video from a camcorder?

i want to learn the best and most efficient ways to do each step (import, edit, burn) and i know this site is the place to find answers.

thanks!

What Roxio program do you have? You said EMC 9, in your first post. Unless you have a real stripped down OEM version, you have VideoWave, within the suite of programs, in EMC 9.

Where did you get your EMC 9 software?

i purchased the roxio software when i bought my pc (so it was pre-loaded when my pc arrived at my home). sorry if i sound really naive, not knowing what version of roxio i have... (but, right now, i don't seem to see where it says 'videowave' within my program)

when i open the roxio program, i get a screen that says 'easy media creator 9.' when i click on 'applications' and 'utilities' within the program, it says 'media import' and 'mydvd' and 'mydvd express.' when the program is open and i go to 'help-about', it says the following:

Roxio Creator DE

does any of this info help?

thanks!

Remove the serial number now !.

The DE means a OEM program modified for/by Dell. Most of the OEM programs are limited in what you can do with it. You do not have Video Wave so you must do your editing in MyDVD. You will also not have all the options in My DVD menu creation as you would in a full edition. These programs are called teaser since they tease you into buying the full program. It gives you just enough to make a DVD.

As for buying a program, if you like (it is logical) the interface (home page) that your version gives you, and you can use the video editor in My DVD, then by all means consider buying Easy Media Creator (EMC) 10 if you can afford to upgrade. EMC 10 will look slightly different on the Home screen but the programs work the same as in EMC 9. Recent prices for the program have been as low as $50 for holiday specials.

If you are struggling with the logic of the program, you might look at some other programs in this price range. All that I know about, have trial downloads (including EMC 9 on this forum). If you have time, look at product reviews at several sites. Buy the one that suits you the best after you try. I own a couple and EMC seems to work best for me.

BTW, it is great that you came to this forum to ask questions now rather than after you bought something. :)

thanks very much for this info!

is it possible that the 'edit chapters' feature is disabled in this dell version that i have? i have been trying to create my dvds for some time now and cannot seem to get the 'edit chapters' menu where it is not grayed out.

i have de-activated mcafee and closed all other programs and i can't seem to make this menu work -- and, if you have read my other posts, chapter creation is the main feature i want on my dvds.

i just want to make sure it isn't something i am doing wrong before i upgrade to emc10. what do you think?

thanks much!

Ilana, can you tell me if you have found a solution to your problem? My version of the software also came with my Dell laptop, and I have the exact same problem: I can't click on Edit Chapters (actually, I can click on it, and when I go over with the mouse, it underlines Edit chapters, but when I click on it, nothing happens).

I wouldn't want to upgrade unnecessarily, because everyting else I need is there.

Thanks,

Dan
