Install Problem

Geed

Question

I purchased the downloadable version of EMC 10 on 12/31 and I notice that the name of the installation file is the exact same name as the update, "RoxioEMCSuitev10_4737GA50R05.exe".

Even so..... after many attempts to install it I am still unsuccessful. After reboot I get the skin error messages and the roxapp crash error. Even after following the clean install and all the suggestions found in the forums here I still can't get it to install.

Sorry for the lack of details in that post. I originally wrote that as a reply to iNexxFear's post HERE but it was moved into it's own topic.

I planned on posting all the exact details later tonight but I will try to add a little more now (from memory).

I am using Vista Ultimate (not OEM) installed on a Dell XPS 720 system. I have gone through many, many, many attempts at installing EMC 10 without success. I have gone through all the steps for a clean install as well as trying all the special fixes posted on these forums like registering vbscript.dll from an elevated command prompt, disabling un-needed services/programs in msconfig, disabling my antivirus (I even tried uninstalling it), running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the DirectXsetup, turned off UAC, cleaned out the registry and related files in between installation attempts, and even crossed my fingers a few times.

I have a spare HP computer running Vista Premium that I use for testing purposes so I tried installing EMC 10 on that and guess what.... it installed perfectly!! No problems or issues and all the applications work fine. Too bad this is a spare PC  . Then just to test further I tried installing it on my wife's Sony Vaio laptop and it would not install on there - same problems as before.

This is so frustrating. The program installs fine on some computers and won't on others. Why can't Roxio nail down this installation issue since it is happening to so many people? I plan on opening a ticket later tonight to see if they can help me any further.

I don't think Roxio can nail down how every user has their computer set up. You have something running that is killing your install.

Is it possible for an installed program to conflict with EMC 10 installation even if that program is not running in the background? Since I do have that computer where EMC 10 did install I will compare it to my computer and try to narrow down any obvious differences. I'll post an update after I finish.

It may not be something obvious, unfortunately. It could be Defender, Zone Alarm, or some other blocking software you may have on the computer that causes the install to fail.

I am getting the exact same errors on my install on a Vista Premium HP system. EMC9 ran wonderfully. I should have practiced "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" instead of buying an upgrade.

I too wasted most of my Sunday installing, uninstalling (what a painful process), reinstalling without any difference. I get the same error messages.

I am going to see if I can install this on my XP Media Center box to see if it will work and then reinstall EMC9 on my Vista machine. Roxio certainly has some debugging to do.

I don't think that is the problem. My HP M8000N is AMD 64 based but the OS is Vista Home Premium 32-bit version, not 64-bit.

Looking at the error messages again I am wondering if Microsoft Visual C++ has something to do with it? I do recall installing a program recently (within the past month, before trying to install EMC 10) that during the installation process a window popped up saying it was installing Visual C++. I just wish I can remember which program that was!!

Well... I give up.

I just spent an entire Saturday trying to figure out what program/issue is preventing the installation of EMC 10 on my computer and it still won't install successfully.

On that Sony Viao laptop I was using as a test system - for each program I thought might be interferring, I restored the laptop using a backup from it's factory default, installed one program then installed EMC 10 to see if it would fail. I went through 5 cycles of this for each program and each time EMC 10 installed and ran fine.

I just don't get it. When I originally tried to install EMC 10 on this same laptop that had these same programs installed the EMC 10 install failed. Now I can't get it to fail at all.

So I went back to my main computer (the Dell XPS, the one I want EMC 10 on) and I went through every step of the clean install method. Deleted the folders, cleaned out the registery, meticulously went through every instance of Sonic and Roxio and cleaned everything out. I went into msconfig and disabled every non-Windows service and every startup program. Installed EMC 10, rebooted, and Skin Image error once again.

I really don't know why it should be this hard to install a program. In all my years of computing (over 20 years) I have never had this much of a problem trying to install a program.

Oh well, I pray someone can figure this out.

Just for the record, here are the error messages I am getting....

Hi Geed,

The Microsft VisualC++ Runtime is installed with / by a lot of programs, Microsoft Office Sutes are one of them.

As far as I can tell, the meaning of the error message(s) is just that the calling program failed (probably because a required (*.dll?) is missing or prohibited from executing).

Does support even have a telephone number they respond to.. I have Roxio Creator 10, and when I went to utilize the DVDCopy, it attempted to execute an update in which it could not find the installation files, which is strange, so I am now on this path of attempting to re-install the application of course I have to re-download the application from digitalriver..I paid the $4.99 for recurring downloads or whatever it is, now I am in this endless support email loop. Hey support can someone pick up the phone or stop sending the same instructions over and over again, they don't work

Hello Geed,

I am having the same problem as you!

(Note, I have done about 5 "clean installs" with the same bad result.)

My System is an HP M8120n (Intel Core Duo Quad processor baised). Looking at your early posts, the M8000n system you had successs with, is an Athlon 64 based system. The Dell and Sony are Intel Core Duo quad based.

So, here is the problem! The EMC-10 install seems to be trying to install x64 modules in to x86 (32 bit) machines!

Of Course, it does not work!!!

I confirmed this by looking at C:\program files\common files\PX Storage Engine. The pxcpya64.exe, pxcpyi64, pxinsa64.exe, and pxinsi64.exe are NOT compatable with x86 machines! (these .exe modules seem to have come from pxengine3_00_58a.zip that I down loaded upon a recommendation else where in this forum. I removed these modules (delete the PX Storage Engine folder), and did a "repair" install from the control panel programs and features. But, the same .dll's are reinstalled, and EMC-10 still has the same problems.

I think that what we really need is a "patch" for the patch - ie an install process that correctly identifies the

Windows OS version, and installs the correct program versions.

Hello mhteicher,

Yes they have phone numbers. The web support tech's will provide the correct number for you in a reply to your web ticket. They had me jump through a lot of "clean install" premutations first. Note, the "phone" techs (1st tier escallation) could not solve the problem either, and the 2nd tier escallation simply refunded my purchase price!

Roxio clamed that it is a small problem "one in 100,000".

You might try a complete Windows recovery. That seemed to work for me the first go round, but the Video capture did not work, and "repair" / "reinstall" / "clean install" (many permutations with variations) only seemed to make the problem worse!

Hi backpacker777,

I had the same very bad results with EMC 9, as with EMC10 on Vista. EMC 9 worked (works) well in the XP SP2 machine, but neither work in VISTA.

My systems are also HP, and the preinstalled EMC9 work, untill you install the updates SP34995 and SP34996. These patches make the same mess as EMC 10! HP support had me do a complete windows recovery to fix the problem.

Okay, here is an update...

Before I begin let me give some background to help everyone know the situation here: I have 3 computers here: a Dell XPS 720 (non-OEM Vista Ultimate), a HP M8000N (OEM Vista Premium), and a Sony Viao FZ283BN laptop (OEM Vista Business). I had failed installations on the XPS and Viao but a successful install on the HP.

I compared the programs that are already installed on all 3 computers to narrow down which one may be causing the installation failure. I've narrowed it down to a few possible culprits: Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8, Sony DVD Arhitect Studio 4.5, Kaspersky Antivirus 7.0, VideoLAN VLC Media Player, or WinAMP MP3 player. The 2 computers that had failed installs both had these programs installed on them - the other computer did not have any of these programs installed.

On the Viao laptop I de-installed Kaspersky AV, Vegas Movie Studio, and DVD Arhitect and re-tried installing EMC 10. No go - it still failed. So instead of playing around further I restored the laptop back to the factory image using a backup I had and then re-tried installing EMC 10. This time it worked!! No errors or problems. The only programs that were removed by restoring the backup were the ones listed above, everything else remained the same.

I am hoping that everyone else out there who is having the installation problem has one or more of these programs installed. That would help confirm and narrow it down. Hopefully I have not confused everyone since it looks like there is a glimmer of hope here! I am going to continue testing to see what I can come up with. The ultimate goal is to get this installed on the XPS which is my main computer and the one I bought it for.
