Help Me Figure Out This Mystery!

Guest RCD74

Question

Hi - This is a strange one. I created 5 data dvds within a 2 day period using EMC9. 2 were made from Creator Classic using the disc spanning while 3 were made using Data Disc (all the same exact media - Verbatim DataLife Plus). I wanted to "test" the dvds in another computer to make sure they worked. They ALL worked fine on the computer I used that has EMC9 installed on it (running XP). When I checked the dvds on our laptop (also running xp), 1 of the 2 that were made in Creator Classic DID NOT open and weren't recognized by the computer when opening Explorer, and 1 of the 3 made in data disc were also not recognized. Sometimes the drive just didn't even acknowledge a disc was inserted, while other times it showed a dvd was there, but nothing was in it and it had no identification number for the disc listed. I then tried these same discs in my parents' desktop computer (running xp) and they WERE recognized. Do the drivers on this laptop need to be updated?? If that was the case, why read some discs and not others. I just don't get it!! Thanks.

Hi Rachel,

I continue to believe that the drives in Dell computers aren't up to snuff. Being a many year, multi Dell user, I've alwasy relied on their drive when I purchased and added my own later which always allowed me to have fewer problems. I can't prove it except to say I have similar problems at work (though rarely) on my 5 Dells.

I'm sorry, but I really don't have an answer for you except to try different brands of media which I believe has been mentioned before.

Thanks Paul. It is just really baffling to me. Like I told you in an email last week, I don't really need to transfer my data to the laptop so it isn't a big deal if it isn't recognized. I just find it so strange and thought maybe there was an answer. Now, if this happens when I get my NEW computer, then I will be freaking out (or just wasting lots of discs until I get it right). I am getting nervous reading some of these posts where people are saying their data discs burned in xp aren't compatible with vista! I hope I don't run into those problems!! :(

Maybe someone else has an answer that makes more sense but I can only say that the greater majority of discs I make in Creator Classic have had no problems being read in a number of different drives and I'm hopeful that your new system will work the same way.

Are you having the same problems when working with cd's? I'm curious if this problem exists only with dvd's.

To be honest, I haven't tried any cd's in that laptop. I should go ahead and take ALL my data discs whether they are cds or dvds and just try them out. I rarely use that laptop for anything other than surfing the web and we play dvds in it as entertainment on plane rides for the kids. It hasn't ever given me a problem with a commercial dvd or even ones I have made with videowave and then burned. It was just those 2 data discs it didn't like. I have tried other dvd data discs in that laptop and they work fine (even other brands of media). It is just bizarre!!

Check the disc's for read errors. In V9 DVDInfo Pro, or use the Free CDDVDSpeed, disc quality check, Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.5.0 released!

http://www.cdspeed2000.com.

What is the media ID (MID), the DVD Burner ID String, and firmware version? That would be for both pc's and what x speed did you burn the disc's at?

"using the disc spanning" I would not use this as a backup for anything!
