i'm not sure quite how to answer that other than to reiterate they are avi files - video clips. had a look at the thread you highlighted, far from having a conflict between 2 identically named files, i don't appear to have any file of that name in my system32

As Brendon mentioned, avi files are 'container' files. There are different types such as DV-AVI, Divx and Xvid (these are the most popular). For Divx and Xvid, you need to have the proper codecs. It appears you do since you can play them in WMP. I can only guess that you have an OEM version of Roxio. Can you confirm what version of EMC9 you do have?

yeah you're spot on, it's an OEM version. is that bad?

It explains why you can't use the divx/xvid files. :(

You'll have to upgrade to the full version of 9 or 10 (the latest version) to have this functionality.

You might try downloading and installing ffdshow from

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

During its install, there will be a window in which you can set it to allow any app to use it.

You may also need to check its Video codec configuration page (this has a separate shortcut in start/programs/ffdshow that will be created during install) to enable its use for xvid and divx.

With a bit of luck Videowave will agree to use it (can't guarantee, but it did use ffdshow for me for a different format, but I have the retail version). FFdshow is free, so no harm in trying.

Feanor,

This is usually caused by you not having the required decompressor (codec) installed on your system.

AVIs are 'container files'. You store compressed video in them. To 'decompress' the video again you need a file/filter which matches the one used to compress the file initially. If you don't have a decompressor for the particular AVI you're trying to use, you get the cross in a circle sign.

To see what codec is used in an AVI, and check it against what you have installed, get a copy of Gspot, a free codec analyser available here (click link).

You run GSpot and drag and drop your AVI file onto it. It will tell you what codec is used, and what codecs you have installed. You then search for and download and install the missing codec.

Regards,

Brendon

i appreciate your swift response. i wouldn't have thought it was a codec issue as i have no problem playing these files with wmp. however i did download and try Gspot but it said the codec was installed already. any other suggestions?

cheers.

And what type of files are these exactly? It could be you've run into a problem that many of us have and it's discussed here.
