Roxio 10 causes "read only attribute" problem

presydent

Question

After installing Roxio Easy Creator version 10, I can no longer open a file on my CD/RW drive, edit it and then save it as the same file name, nor can I delete that file. All of the files on my CD/RW disk are for some unknown reason, now marked as "read only" and although I have adminstrator status on my Dell XPS desktop XP Professional system, I cannot perform tasks that I used to perform. Can anyone tell me why I cannot reset the read only attribute on those files? Is this a Roxio or Microsoft problem. I just spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Dell and they claimed it is a Roxio problem, and maybe something to do with DLA no longer available on my system due to the Roxio installation. What gives? Who knows? HELP!!!!

You have me a bit confused here - files written to a CD are always set +R.

What you may be thinking of is 'Drag to Disc' where files could be erased, etc, which is no longer part of EMC and, instead, Vista uses its own packet writing - in which case it's MS who are responsible for that end of things

I haven't had time to try DLA out with my EMC10 because I have D2D installed there and that conflicts with DLA, however if you have or can get a copy of the disc which installs DLA I'd suggest that you first uninstall it and then reinstall it. This way you'd get a fresh [and hopefully] unbroken installation of DLA which might work once more. It's not guaranteed, but I think it's worth a crack.

Unless you like Windows Blue screens I would refrain from loading DLA. Most of the most recent Windows updates make this a most painfull experience.

Tnx for your reply. I may be confused, but I do not think so. I have always been able to open a file by double-clicking it, such as a Lotus 1-2-3 files stored on a CD/RW ROM, then while it's in memory, I update that file and when finished do a Save and it's saved to the same CD/RW ROM using the same file name/file type. This is no longer true since I've installed Roxio 10. I've been in contact with Dell, since it's a Dell XPS system I'm running with XP Professional, and have since been in contact with Roxio and Microsfot to no avail. Should I not be able to do what I had been doing previously? Your advice will be appreciated. Tnx.

I don't think you're confused. The suggestion by the Dell tech that DLA might no longer be available gives the hint about what might have happened, and the other symptoms fit that.

For you to erase files from your CD or save edited copies over the top of the old copies the way you have, you must have (1) been running a packet writing application such as Sonic Drive Letter Access (DLA), Nero's InCD, or Roxio's Drag 2 Disc, and (2) you must be running with an RW disc. My guess is that it was DLA since the tech was expecting it to be there. You might be able to find it mentioned in Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.

It looks as if something has disabled that packet writing application - perhaps Easy Media Creator 10, I don't know. Since EMC10 no longer has its own packet writer, perhaps the programmers have not been scrupulous about making sure there won't be a conflict with DLA. [i emphasize that I'm guessing - I don't know what they've done here.]

Anyway, if DLA has been broken the other symptoms follow. The files which were previously written on the RW with the R attribute unset are now appearing in Explorer with that flag set and you can't delete or save them over themselves with Windows Explorer any more.

Curve,

You asked earlier before your edit, if I had D2D running with EMC 10.

Yes, I do - in Vista with EMC 10.

Voilà! I hope you can see the screen-clip. If not, you may need to wait until Invision get the board fixed up.

Well the Red Box version installed D2D in my Vista, as it does.

Vista wasn't overly happy with that version, since it said some of the DLA drivers were causing a conflict, so I updated them with the 32-bit DLA patch from John's pinned post HERE. D2D has run nicely ever since. The version number it now shows is 905B26B.ENU.R01 (D2D32_805) [the version number in the screenshot above is from another patch]

Since EMC 10 doesn't interfere with D2D, you can leave it in when you install EMC 10.

You can't say these things won't work unless you try them, but you need lots of backups when you're experimenting so, Caution kids - don't do this at home.

Brendon
