Won't Play

Question

Someone, please help... I have come across enough mention on web of ability to create DVDs fine in version 6, but v10 copies only playback on PC, not TV. But no one has posted any solution. Can anyone help.

I presume Sonic myDVD version 6 - as in my case. And i thought the upgrade to 10 would give me much better options on DVD/movie project (which it didn't - seperate matter). I can (with a struggle) burn my DVD, and it will play back (jittery) on PC, but will not work on TV.

For the record...I am using a high-spec Dell desktop less than 24 months old running XP, i have external Sony DRX 710UL (also meant to be one of best for multi compat), a new Sony DVD player. I have tried SOny DVD-R, Sony DVD+R, Verbatim-R, Verbatim+R .. ALL with same results. They will play on PC but get the very simple error on DVD player "Cannot read disc". The discs I created with Sonic 6 play fine.

I have also tried burning my project direct to disc, and I have tried creating iso image on hard-drive and burning from there. The SAME result.

I am an IT consultant/analyst, and it's pretty obvious to me that if all the parameters stay the same except for ONE, that ONE is your prime suspect (the upgarde to v10). OR there are more settings with v10, and I need to correct them. Please can someone tell me this is the case, and all I need to do is set a=1 and b=2, or something along those lines. I have a large group of parents waiting to watch their kids in the school christmas concert! [Last time I volunteer!]

If your PC is that old, then update your Video Card Drivers as well as DirectX. Probably need to update firmware for that Sony burner too.

Get a couple of DVD RW discs to play with.

Generally speaking, if a DVD plays anywhere, there is nothing wrong with the DVD…

Still there are a few ways a user can screw it up so it might be better if you would describe in detail the steps you are taking and what specific programs within the suite you are using.

Sorry , I posted this in wrong thread...

Someone, please help... I

I would like to add to my last post...and quote from someone else's thread:

"Ok so i reinstalled DVD creator8 burned the same project on the disc that would not read and guess what? yep it reads perfectly. MYDVD10 has a bug! Fact."

Will all the gurus replying to these threads please get it into your heads, it IS NOT the discs OR the rewriter. There is something wrong with the more "advanced/differnet" way EMC10 is creating discs, or the default options are different.

I have read a good number of posts across different websites stating the same thing. Run an old version 8 or less, and burn DVD and they will play on anything. I created 50+ discs at Easter (using Sonic 6) this year for a school - using Sony DVD-RW and Sony discs and did not have a single complaint - and I would presume all 50 parents were not using the same player.

I have changed nothing EXCEPT installed and used EMC10 instaed of Sonic 6. The discs are from the same box, the DVD player is the same. The software is different. The end result will NOT play.

.... in replay to James, thanks for the prompt reply, but please explain to me why I need to upgrade my hardware, when the only changing factor is the software Sonic-EMC - and it is myDVD in both I am using.

Gee phil, I don't know…

Explain to me why if this is a "bug", why doesn't everyone else suffer from it? The program has been out for about 4 months, preceded by period of beta testing worldwide???

Maybe if you update your PC as suggested, you won't have these problems…

No good deed goes unpunished !

There is a lot of information to sort out in your post from MyDVD 6 to EMC 10 and I'm not sure I got it all sorted out. You do have EMC 10 and were able to get the video onto your computer (how) and now when you try to make a DVD, you get it to play on your DVD but not on a DVD player -- correct?

First be a little more specific about your computer. Do you know what kind of video card/chip you have? Have you updated the drivers for it and have you updated DirectX 9c?

Now a little more recap: (as instructions - I know you did most of this but perhaps something was missed.) especially previewing the ISO file in a virtual drive or in Copy and Convert.

If you were able to capture the video file properly, do your editing in Video Wave and save the project. Open My DVD and add that project (an others if needed). If you don't need a menu, you can create a DVD no menu when you open MyDVD. When you go to burn, select to burn to an ISO file. Name it and select where you want it. When that finishes encoding, you can preview it by mounting it as a virtual drive ( under tools - Disc Image) If it looks OK copy it to a DVD blank. Use good quality DVD blanks, no store brand, no Memorex. DVD-R tend to be more universally accepted especially on older players.

I'm sure I missed some things, let me know what and I'll follow up. Let us know how it goes.

Just in case, make sure you have checked for malware, that you have defragged your hard drive and that you have plenty of free space. When the project is encoding, make sure nothing else is running especially your anti-virus. No catching up on e-mail or games.

..............please explain to me why I need to upgrade my hardware, when the only changing factor is the software Sonic-EMC - and it is myDVD in both I am using.
The difference is in how the two versions of software use the hardware. The are engineered differently. For example, v10 relies on the GPU of your graphics card and the firmware of your burner to output. v6 worked entirely different.

Thanks everyone for the replies, but to cut through the clutter, there was till nothing really helpful, except someone hinted that the two products do somethign entirely different.

The problem:

(1) I have myDVD 6 on my PC one day - I take a movie project and burn to a Sony DVD-R disc using my Sony DVD burner. I give it to 50 people and no one complains that it cannot run on their DVD players attached to their TVs.

(2) I install myDVD 10 (part of EMC10) on the same PC the next day - I take a movie project and burn to a Sony DVD-R disc (from the same box as the previous one) using the same DVD burner. I don't even consider offering it to anyone as it will not play on the two DVD players I have attached to TVs.

(3) Finally, I'm sorry but I have seen plenty postings about exactly the same issue on this and other sites.

The PC is not old and does not need replacing. It is kept up to date with Windows update and most other automatic updates for the installed kit. I will check this.

But query for me. If this were such a significant issue, why not highlight this issue more when installing or running first time.

When you installed the program and started up My DVD, didn't you get a warning screen about video drivers? If not, perhaps the install was bad. Did you have your anti-virus running - it will prevent any program from properly registering some of the dll files. Did you install to a clean and defragged computer? All normal practices for installing any software.

Earlier versions of EMC than V8 handled video encoding differently so your DVD played. In the new version, to increase the speed of the encode, My DVD relies very heavily on your video card to do the encoding to a DVD usable format -- if you choose to do it in hardware mode (use video cards). If you chose to do the encoding via the software; like earlier versions, then you need to change to software mode. I've already told you how to do that.

Also encoding the project to a DVD compliant format is a CPU intensive process. Because of this, it is preferred to separate the encoding from the burning so your computer only does one thing at a time.

I'm not sure anyone is insisting that you need to upgrade your computer to run the program. Updating the video card/chip driver is not a regularly scheduled update so it must be done when you are having the problems that you are describing.

There is nothing in a burners firmware other than Available Write Descriptors for known media ID's (MID) or a generic Write Strategy for unknown media!! Don't make more of it than it is, please.
