Government proposes to relax copyright laws

Record labels fear changes may bring free-for-all

Under a new set of proposals to change the law on copyrighted music, the British Government is to allow legitimate owners of digital music to make copies for their own use. Whilst this has undoubtedly become commonplace - for example when anyone makes a CD to MP3 conversion in iTunes for listening through their iPod - the procedure is expected to be made legal in the UK very soon.

"...For Their Own Use.." Makes a lot of sense to me. If I legally buy it, I should be able to use it anyway I want if it's for my use only and not for resale, transfer etc. What so many are doing however, is to purchase legally and then make copies for many other friends or persons.

I remember a comment in a discussion thread somewhere from somewhere who said he would only do it the old-fashioned way - borrow a tape and make a copy of the the tape.

Most of my collection is from street bands, who don't have any more after they run out. What do you do then, if you can't make a copy of someone else's copy?
