cannot edit using videowave

had movie clip (mpg) that i need to edit. (not trim). need to keep about 2 1/2 minutes of a 15 minute segment of a tv show, and then need about another 15 seconds from the end of the show. followed the directions for deleting part of a clip (setting marker points, clicking and control clicking, and then clicking on the minus sign) but all that does is delete the stopping marker point. how the heck do i delete a piece in the middle w/o deleting my sanity also? do i perhaps need a different program?
