Video C&C pauses when display sleeps

Mean

Question

I was converting some TV programs using the latest version of DIVX. I knew it would take awhile so I left it overnight. While my computer does not sleep, the display will go to standby after 20 minutes. If I left the program working on the 3rd out of 10 files, I would come back the next day and it would be on the 4th of 10 at 0% complete. After a few rounds of this, I decided to turn the standby option for the monitor off. That was the ticket. The C&C continued from file to file without stopping.

Any ideas why the display going into standby would cause the program to stop running?

Have you checked your power settings to see if the hard drive is set to power down after awhile? I've review all your power settings and make sure none are set to do anything at all if you plan on leaving things on all night.

You don't say what OS you're using but I've read about problems like yours in Vista. Don't know why they had to mess with the way things worked in XP. :angry2:

Yes I have Vista. Because of that, I have had to disable sleep in general. It worked for a while on this new PC which came with Vista, but suddenly it stopped waking up properly. Fan comes on 100% and screen remains blank requiring a hard power down. Nice. The hard drive still sounds like it is spinning but you are probably right. Of course, if the computer is busy, it SHOULDN'T sleep in the 1st place. Argh!

Thanks,

G
