Generaly sick of Roxio

zulutech

Question

Why is it that Roxio attaches to my CD writers and somehow encrypts or brands my CDs so that they cannot be read by any other PC that does not have Roxio installed? This is just so sick, like they have some ego problem or something and cant handle it. This has been a problem since the first time I used Roxio years ago, I finally had to just get the da*m junk off my PC. Now my wife gave me EMC 9 to make movies and my life is filled with stress, anxiety and remorse for ever having put this junk on my PC. I drag and drop files to my CD, they get burned on, then fine I can view them on the PC where they are stored in the first place. But should I want to take them to another PC and show the pics or move them there, I cannot, it wont even reccognize that there is a disk in the drive. I put another disk in that I created before I installed Roxio, and it works fine. Roxio Sucks so bad. I just wish I could get my fingers around the throat of the guy who came up with this evil concept. Then I would get some work done. I dont want to see "Roxio (D)" in my CD drive. I Dont want Roxio to have anything to do with burning CDs unless I say so. How do I make that happen without uninstalling Roxio and wasting her $70 gift?

Zulutech,

The first thing you need to do before you start off half-cocked venting on a support board is R.T.F.M. You should have got a user's manual with your EMC 9 disc, please read it.

Now that you have read it, or just in case you are really so unreasonable that you refuse to read it, time for a brief revision of the parts that apply to your situation. There will be a short test afterwards :)

-There are two popular ways to burn optical discs in PCs, and the currently favored names for these two methods are (1) Authoring, and (2) Packet writing

-these methods are not interchangeable

-Authoring involves selecting a group or selection of files in a 'project' and burning them in a session to a disc. A session can be a whole disc worth, or a number of sessions can be written until the disc is 'closed' or becomes full.

-Packet-writing involves specially formatting a disc and then dragging and dropping individual files to the disc in Windows Explorer. These formatted discs can only be used for packet writing unless they're RW discs and you erase them.

-Authored discs can generally be read in any Windows machine, while packet-written discs may need special treatment to be read outside of the machine which made them.

-Roxio did not invent packet writing, but all the major companies have included both systems in their burning suites for many years.

-Roxio's authoring system in EMC 9 is called Creator Classic, while Roxio's packet-writer in EMC 9 is called Drag-to-Disc or Drag-2-Disc

Having got through that, what you are describing appears to be the packet writer. If you don't like it (and many don't because it is so hard to use and limited in interchangeability, and wears out RW discs so fast) you should stop using it and perhaps uninstall it.

-before uninstalling it, make sure you have got any files you need off the discs you made with it. You may not be able to read them after you uninstall.

-to uninstall go to Control Panel >Add/Remove programs and remove Drag-to-Disc. If you can't find an entry for it in Add/Remove, come back here and we'll help further.

-after you have the files off them, you can erase any RW discs you have and re-use them with Creator Classic.

From now on, use Creator Classic with unformatted discs, and your discs won't have Roxio as the default volume name, and will be seen in your friends' PCs. Burned the right way they will even be seen in their DVD players.

Now, go and have a good weekend, unless there are other questions you need answered.

Regards,

Brendon
