Media capture (video) freezes

joejoe

Question

I have installed EMC 10 on a gateway laptop. When I start the video portion of media capture and try to select my video capture card (adaptec AVC 1100) the program freezes. (not responding shows at the top) and task manager show two instances running.

If i kill the application it does not kill all the processes and wont let me restart it.

Before installing this i uninstalled an old version 7 and a free version of my dvd.

suggestions? I saw in another post a reference to a clean install so I will look that up now.

I dont see clean instructions for XP home. I see several references to formating drives and such. Sorry this isnt worth it.

As a side note I tried to open an email to Roxio support and that kept crashing too. Is it me or does Roxio have problems with their site?

Thanks in advance for any help

I understand that laptops arent ideal for this but when the minimum specs for EMC 10 were so far below what is have I ASSUMED it would be ok. Anyway I cant change that.

I am trying to convert some home video. The quality wasnt what I wanted and the software that came with the capture device only had one option for Quality. When I tried to update that software the cost was so much I decided to go for the suite.

I didnt use EMC7 for capture...it was significatly older than the My DVD that came with the capture card. too late now.

You list "supported devices" and mention that the adaptec AVC-1100/1200 IS ONLY usb 1.1. Will usb 2.0 capture devices ONLY work with this? I will search for updated drivers for the adaptec now. Thanks for the suggestions

The minimum requirements, listed by Roxio, are a complete joke, and they know it. Those minimums are the minimums for getting the computer to boot up. :(

Your AVC 1100 came with software to make it work with what it lacks.

You will have to use that software for it capture with. You can try it with Windows Movie Maker to see if it can use the AVC 1100 for capture… I doubt it, but give it a shot.

Other than that, what GPB suggests will probably result in better quality video anyway.

There is a problem with the site. They just changed over to a new server, but that doesn't affect your problem with capture. Update the video drivers for your laptop.

Updated with the latest drivers from Gateway just now. Unfortunately it didnt resolve the issue. I will try to send an email tomorrow to Roxio. I was really hoping to have this project done this weekend. sigh.

Thanks for the help though.

The software doesn't generally run too well on laptops, mainly because of the limited quality of the video chipsets. Then again, it could be compatibility problems between the software and your capture card. Did any capture software come with your capture card?

What are you trying to capture from?

When I googled for that device, I saw only a USB 1.1 device. If that is true, I don't doubt that it freezes. There are also updated drivers for that device from the original in 2003. The updated driver is just a month later. You may want to try that.

I saw one retailer indicate that an old version of My DVD comes with the device. They did not state the version numbers but looks like something from almost 4 years ago.

Here are some supported capture devices should you want to go that way.

If EMC 7 allowed you to capture and if you have the free space on your hard drive, you might want to consider reinstalling at least part of EMC 7.
