To answer your questions, what quality scan tool did you use?

At what X speed did you scan your disc?

Did you save a image or text of the scan? If you did post it.

No, Roxio did not include DVDInfo Pro in EMC 10. I do know of a excellent free tool if needed.

cd

I have tried Nero CD-DVD Speed and scanned with 8x.

I think i can make a picture of the scan.

There is no manual to the program so I don't understand anything of it :-(

Use the defaults of the program and scan at 8X. To save a .png image click the floppy icon top right of the window.

CDDVDSpeed user guide. :)

RW discs show more errors because they're a less stable medium I think, plus they've been handled more than R discs.

To show a picture on the forum you upload it to your own website or a hosting site, and use a link to the picture in your message.

Not all drives have the circuitry to report jitter, so CD-DVD speed can only show jitter on those drives which support it.

Since RW discs are only a temporary storage medium and you should never have your only copy of any precious data on one, just keep using them until they fall over, and then stop using them. I don't know of any program which can test and predict when they will fail.

Brendon

Ok, thanks. I will try that.

Pomse,

It's usual for RW discs to show more errors than R discs. On an R DVD if you get a zero quality score that's usually because of a peak in PI failures down in the bottom window. If you're getting a 20 score on a RW you're doing quite well :)

The error rate is affected by disc quality, drive efficiency, and burn speed. Often, lowering burn speed will lower the error rate significantly.

It's common for DVDs to pause, stutter, or stop around the worst places, and the green in the bottom screen turns purple where the error rate is too high. When that happens the disc is worthless, although [depending on where the worst errors are] you might still be able to play parts or get some files back off it.

Brendon

Ok, I am happy to hear that about the 20 for the RW disc. But why does RW disc's show more errors ? and what did you use to upload your png picture on this forum ? Is it also normal that CD-DVD speed will not scan after jitters on DVD+RW ? because everytime I scan I only get this sign - on the jitters.

I also get a lot of 0 in disc quality on my DVD+RW. So how can I test a RW to find out if its so bad that I can't use it anymore ?

Pomse,

While you're working out how to post the picture, look down near the bottom right corner of the display for the quality score.

80 to 90 is okay, 95 is quite acceptable thank you. Anything higher than that is bliss and yes, I am boasting this time

pomse,

if you scanned a DVD Video disc you burned and your quality score is '0' there's no point, the disc is a coaster. Look at Brendon's posted scan, it shows '0' PO Failures. What does your show?

( should the dvd-rw be empty or not ?) DVD-RW is a odd duck, I don't use them. A DVD -R or +R even Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are about $0.30 a disc, use one next burn!

RW disc do wear out. How many times has it been reused? Eventually, RW discs have to be trashed.

I have burned on it a couple of times. I also have a dvd-rw with a movie on that I have recorded from tv with my philips dvd recorder it says the dvd quality is 20 on this dvd.

The disc I scanned with 0 in quality score is a dwd-rw that i used roxio to burn 4 gb of video files, pictures and other stuff on it. It has only been burned on it 1 time before.

I cannot see any PO failures i only get this sign -

Yes but DVD-RW is good to record movies, series, news, documentary programs and other stuff on the TV. Then I can always delete them again and use them again. I use Philips or Memorex DVD+RW I pay about $20 for 25 disc.
