Submenus won't work on DVD player?

MJPrieger

Question

Hi, I'm trying to burn a DVD with 8 short home-made movies, using 2 sub-menus. I'm using DVD-R, which I have used before with no problems (these are TDK). Discs play fine in the computer DVD drive, but won't play in my DVD player (Sony). If I shorten the disc to 2-3 movies with no sub-menus, it seems to work fine. Is there any way to work around this, or do I just need to make 2 smaller discs?

OK, I can't get out until tonight to buy the new DVD's, but I'm just curious. I tried putting MyDVD setting back to HQ, saved to iso, then started to do a copy. Disc Copier told me to get a disc that was large enough to hold the entire file--it didn't try to compress at all. Do I need to check a box or something to trigger the compression?

Thanks again!

Continuing from above--went out & purchased Verbatim DVD-R's last night. Same result. Seems to be that I can put up to 4 items on a main menu, regardless of size. 5 or more makes the player choke. Also, 1 particular movie that I was trying to put on seemed to choke the player no matter what, so I just left it off. Right now I'm making 2 separate DVD's, one with 3 movies, one with 4 movies, but in future, I'd like to be able to make full use of all that additional storage space on the DVD's. Any ideas or suggestions, anyone?

What is the total length, in time, of the video production? If it plays in your computer, that means the burn was fine. Try some Verbatim media, and see if that same production plays on your set top DVD player.

Also, for most folks, in MyDVD, burn to an image file (.iso) instead of burning directly to disc. Then, use Disc Copier to burn that image file, to a DVD, as a DVD compliant movie.

Thanks for your quick response--I will probably try the Verbatim also. I forgot to add some more details in my original post:

1. Total playtime on the DVD is about 1 hr. 15 minutes, I adjusted the quality setting to SP.

2. I tried burning to ISO then using Copier to copy it, with the same results.

3. My set top DVD player will play my "Intro" movie, but then can't cope with the menu (gives me a "Disc is Dirty" message).

4. I just now tried burning a new one with 5 movies, only 1 menu, same results.

I'm really confused, because I've done this several times before, although I never tried using sub-menus, and my DVD player has played those DVD's just fine.

Any other ideas before I run out & buy Verbatim?

Thanks!

Try the Verbatim, but leave the quality, in MyDVD, as HQ (High Quality). The resultant .iso file will be compressed slightly, using Disc Copier, to fit on a standard DVD.

Also, you may have something wrong with your menu structure, but try the new Verbatims, first.
