Lets do some reality checks with this…

The time needed to render a file is based on the LENGTH of play, CPU Speed and Encoder Rate! File size is a meaningless measure. Now, how long are these files you are 'downloading'?

RAM has absolutely nothing to do with time to Render! No matter if you have 512mb or 16gb, when you render you will be using about 300mb…

RAM does help you move about quickly within an editor, but does nothing while you render.

Core Duo, Quad Core are buzzwords thrown out to mask the lack of progress that has taken place over the last few years with CPUs.

LightScribe: Labeler treats it like a printer, tells 'printer' to print something… For it to work you have to have the required drivers, from LightScribe installed correctly and the firmware inside the drive up to date. Nothing Roxio can do about that.

There are some Tips & Tricks concerning it that you will want to look at:

EMC 10

EMC 9

Be sure to look at both locations.

It will be a very useful program to you after you get everything working!

Thanks for the reply guys,

Ill try the .flac out later tonight...i got 3 albums on .flac and my creative zen just wont play it so i cant wait to do that.

The converting..well...i download an .AVI file and i wanna put it on a dvd.....it takes simply ages....now if this is how long it takes i can live with that...but with this machine i though it would be faster.

Lightscribe,,,,the labeler does not see my lightscribe drive.....not even after the above patch, now i have no scribe software as i formatted before a clean install,

Any Ideas?

If you didn't re-install the software, from LightScribe, you won't be able to use any software packages to burn a label. Download and install the LightScribe software, from their site.

Define: "simply ages". Twice the playback time? Real-time? On my machine, which is medieval compared to yours, I figure about 5 to 6 times the playback time to encode. So, give us some actual figures to understand your words.

xqtdec. You been robbin' banks there to afford that kit. Either that or you're very rich?

I've come in late to this thread as my machine trashed a drive and as it was part of a raid setup. You know the rest ???

Backups? What backups..............dohh, I never learn.

Good to see another convert to emc10.

Encoding divx so it plays on a dvd is slower in emc10 than say vsoConvertXtoDVD but it does get the job done.

As stated earlier it's better to buy a divx DVD player and copy several films to one disc. Cost about £30 in the UK. You can afford it? :)

I'm interested in how you're getting along with vista 64? I tried it but half my hardware didn't have drivers so back to 32bit

I must be one of the few people who actually like vista so hope they get a few areas sorted in sp:1

not to turn it to a vista 64 topic but i have to say i am very very happy with it as a package, it looks great and does all of xp's stuff and more, the only small probs i have had is 64bit usb drivers but a few tweaks here and there and they can be solved, the coding time...well im ok with it....i just wanted to check that it was standerd,

As for you backups..well i have 3 machines in use...a workhorse HP that takes care of mails, surfing and web design, a business laptop for work, and the machine described above which is my pride and joy which i built from the ground up. i then went and got a USB/SATA/IDE connector and a 300 gig HDD,

I use Acronis image ready 11 and i have the 3 images on the 300gig disc.... a computer screws up..i boot from the cd...and select the image...back working again in 20 minutes....you might want to look into it.

There are some other programs that will make a dvd from highly compressed files such as divx a bit faster and the quality varies based upon each program and it's settings. In order to make a dvd, the files must be made compliant (mpeg) and this takes time. Even with the fastest computer, you'll likely only see minimal speed increases. There's arguments over which processor/brand is better but there is another way. Get a dvd player that plays divx files and you can fit a number of files on a dvd with more on a dual layer disc and the only time it takes is the time to copy the file to the dvd. In a great majority of the cases, the quality of files on average size televisions are perfectly acceptable.

I can do all the those things.

1. Fast is relative. What type of files are you converting, what are you converting to and what type of system are you using. Conversion takes time---period.

2. Open up Sound Editor, add your flac file and right click it and choose Export and then choose mp3, choose where to export it to and then click Export.

3. I'm not a big fan of the label portion of Roxio nor do I use my LS that much but I've done a number of cd/dvd's with no problems at all.

Perhaps you can explain in more detail what you're doing and what errors or problems it's giving you. And please include your system info.

I'll ditto Acronis, though it takes longer than 20 minutes for me.

That is a very nice system. Wonder what your electric bill is each month.

Well guys gain thank for the replies..its good to come to an active forum rather than waiting days to see if you may have got a reply.

Forgot to try the .flac but its on the agenda for tonight so ill keep you posted, The lightscribe is now sorted thanks to a samsung firmware update...my fault...i assumed if it could see the drive it can do the lightscribe.

And as for simply ages..well the movie was 2 hours 12 Minutes and the encode was one hour and 24 minutes, plus a few for the burn. its just i dont have a comparison so i thought id check it out with you guys to see if this was fast slow or what not.

I'll echo Paul's sentiments for Acronis True Image, though I'm running version 10 yet. But, I also run GoBack, which does "real-time" imaging. Not something you want to necessarily have running on the drives you're manipulating video on, because you're changing too much data too fast. So, I have three physical drives. One drive holds my OS partition and installed applications partitions, as well as critical data. GoBack is protecting this drive. For large file data work, those files reside on my "upper" two physical drives, and GoBack doesn't watch those. Something goes bad on the boot/application drive, open GoBack, select a restore point, and it's all back in a few minutes. If the drive develops a physical problem, then I have my weekly True Image backup on one of the Data drives to help me out. A bit "belt and suspender" maybe, but it works for me!

(Of course, I haven't looked to see if GoBack is Vista ready, or even still available.)

Okay... roughly 1/2 the playback time for encoding? Wow! That's extremely fast in my book. Trust me, you've got quite the system going there, and I'd say it's performing very well. :)

Thanks Dave.

That system should work just fine. 8GB of RAM! Almost sounds like overkill. Should be running professional encoders.

I'd agree. Too bad EMC doesn't take advantage of the Dual Cores, as far as we know. But, as we both know, encoding is simply a processor intensive job, getting a particular package like EMC 10 to do the job faster wouldn't be what I'd expect.
