Question

Guest granath@verizon.net

I try to play a perfedtly good DVD and I get a message saying there is no preferred video decoder for MPEG-2. I have no idea where it went, where it came from, or if I ever had one. My relatively new Optorite DD0401 DVD-R rep told me to look for the mfgr of the DVD I want to play. I have the Install CD for a product called Sonic MyDVD, which seems to be a roxio product. The install CD has "INSTALLER DISC Version 4.5" and OpenDVD printed on it

The reason I'm posting this question is that SonicDVD refuses to install. I get a message that: "My DVD Setup is preparing the Install Shield Wizard, which will guide you through the rest of the setup process. Please Wait." Then another message appears, with MyDVD on the title bar and the following message in the window: "An installation Support file could not be Installed. The parameter is incorrect."

What can I do to get this product installed correctly? I run Windows XP Home Editrion with SP2. Is the SonicDVD product supported on Win XP? If I can get it installed, maybe it will provide a video decoder that will enable me to play my DVDs. Please help if you can. Thanks, Gary

I put the DVD disc in the drive, opened WMP, clicked Play, and moused-over the DVD, VCD, or CD entry in the list. Nothing expanded to the right to indicate any drives. I then clicked DVD, VCD, or CD and WMP started playing the disc.

I think I mentioned it in my initial post, but if not, I have installed a trial version of Cyberlink PowerDVD and can now play DVDs. But this is only a trial version so it looks like I'll have to buy something. Don't know why that is. I would have thought that my PC, which originally came with a CD/DVD reader/burner, would be able to at least play a DVD. I know that if I manufactured a PC with a DVD player I'd make it possible for my customers to play CDs and DVDs without having to buy a decoder or any other stuff.

Anyhow, if I need to uninstall PowerDVD to get the results you thought I should, I can do that. I have a second PC on which I can play DVDs until I get my PC fixed. What do you think about my results?

Thanks, Gary

I don't know for sure but I doubt it. I had this version, came with a Sony DRU 500AX Burner, way back when!

I play DVD's with WMP, I put the disc in the drive and open WMP, click Play at the top left. Does it read DVD, VCD or CD Audio, then expand to the right to list your drives?

As far as I know no version of WMP will natively play DVD's.All of them need a third party decoder to be able to play DVD's.If you go to the link that cd gave you should find one.

If you go to this page you'll see some of 11's requirements.Scroll down to DVD playback and you'll see the same thing,a decoder is needed.

The only one that doesn't as far as I know is WMP11 in some versions of Vista. It's included in the Vista package.
