Unable to add scenes to story board

dddiam

Question

I know how to do what I want with Sonic MyDVD 6.2, but I have not figured out how to do it with Roxio MyDVD 9.

I "Add Movie" and select an existing mpg file. I edit the movie, which places the entire movie into the first panel of the story board. I select that panel and then "Edit Chapters". I can create chapters from the movie, but I don't know how to get those chapters to go into the story board panel.

(In MyDVD 6.2, there was a button that said "Add to Story Board". There is no such button in MyDVD 9, and I cannot drag a scene to the story board because the story board is in a different window).

My objective is not to burn a DVD, but rather to export the edited movie to an mpg file.

NP, so did Redwagon. :o I just wanted to get the OP the information quickly so I felt I should butt in here. You guys must have been up late or just frustrated with the boards.

My DVD 9 is a standalone that does not have Video Wave but does have a video editing program. My DVD 9 Studio has a limited video editing program while My DVD 9 Studio Premier has one that acts and looks like Video Wave without the name. Both of them open with the My DVD name. The OP had some othr OEM version that seems to not have a timeline/storyline option.

I just bought a HP laptop so I knew about the other video editing program. I was just too lazy to go any turn the laptp on to see what the name was.

Not up late Steve, at least for me. Just not being attentive enough. Thanks for the corrective action. I did see however that he had just the basic version, but I did not know as you pointed out that it did not include Videowave.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will look for the video editing program.

BTW, My MyDVD 9 has a timeline/storyline in the production editor, but no timeline/storyline in the item editor.

In MyDVD 6.2, the item editor had a fully redundant set of controls for timeline/storyline, add files, etc. (separate from the same controls in the production editor).

How does the full version behave in this regard?

Also, alas, I do have Vista. Unfortunately, that is the only game in town for newer laptops.

Since I never had 6.2, I know that I'm not understanding the Production editor Vs the Item editor. Perhaps what you are asking is the difference between Video Wave (as mentioned above) and My DVD.

Video Wave will edit the mpg (and other) files to several different formats. You do not have to go through the entire MyDVD menu type operation.

Suggestion, download the 30 day trial of EMC 9 from that part of the forum and try out Video Wave to see if that suits you. Unfortunately, you may have some issues on a Vista machine; many don't but some do. The latest version is EMC 10 which is fully certified. If you buy EMC 9, there is an update (9.1) that makes the program fully certified.

Also, I believe that Roxio still has the 30 day money back refund if you try EMC 10 and don't like it. Ask if you decide to buy EMC 10 from the on-line store.

I am now beginning to understand the terminology. "Production editor", "Video Wave", and the "Movie Editor" for my OEM version of MyDVD Basic Version 9, are all the same thing. So, even though my version does not call it "Video Wave", I will use the term to avoid confusion.

If, from the the main menu on the intial screen, I click the "Add New Movie" button, which allows me to choose a file, and it puts its title onto the title screen. I believe that that screen is called the "Menu Editor". I then select that movie from a dropdown list box, which puts me into the player with the video clip playing.

I then click on the "Edit Movie" button, which puts me into the Video Wave screen. It has a preview panel and a storyline panel. The Video Wave editor shows one single item - my hour-long video clip. Since there is only one item, I cannot drag various scenes into the storyline (or into the timeline).

If I click the "Edit Chapters" button, I can do scene detection, but I am unable to use those scenes as separate items in the Video Wave screen. I am not sure what I can do with those chapters. When I exit the screen, I am back to the Video Wave screen, which still has only a single item in it, namely the entire movie.

It seems that Video Wave is good for shuffling around multiple items, but not for shuffling around scenes or chapters within a single item, and that the Chapter Editor does not have a timeline/storyline.

My objective is pretty basic: I want to edit a single, long video clip (one to three hours in length), break it up into scenes, delete some scenes, shuffle others, add fades between scenes, etc., as if I had added each scene or block of scenes as a separate file. With a video clip of that length, breaking it up by repeated splitting, trimming and saving would not be very feasible.

I don't have time to try it now but you should be able to detect scenes and then add in the ones you want. You may have to start with the full movie, navigate to the same file and detect the scenes and then add the scenes and move them around and then delete the full movie. Do all this before you go to add any audio though.

Watch the first video on this page. It is for Video Wave but it should work for you in your version of My DVD. Of course, it may not because you have that limited version.

Did you find "movee" ? I didn't try it so I don't know what it will do.

I hope I am steering you straight on this suggestion:

Open Videowave and then click on the "timeline" view. Then click on the option to add "Photo/Video" which should show in the "Video" track. Then do your editing from there using the options above the slide area.

BTW, My version of MyDVD is "MyDVD Basic Version 9 Build 905B51A ENU". It came bundled on my HP laptop. I do not know whether this is considered to be the "Free Trial Version", or just a standalone OEM version. Am I in the correct sub-forum?

I tried that, but it didn't help.

It seems that, in this version of MyDVD, the timeline, and the storyline, contain a strip of single "items". If you add two photos and three video clips, then you would have five items in the timeline or the story line.

My entire hour-long mpg file is considered to be a single item.

If I "Edit Item" my only option is to take a slice out of the middle of the video, and throw the rest away.

If I say "Edit Chapter", then I can do scene selection, but I do not have the option to delete scenes, rearrange scenes, or treat scenes as separate items that can be added to a timeline or storyline. "Edit Chapter" is only useful for defining chapter markers, and for tying those points to the menu.

MyDVD 6.2 had a storyline within the item editor, for editing scenes within the item, in addition to a storyline in the production editor. MyDVD 9 only has a storyline in the production editor.

It would be strange if MyDVD 9 was a downgrade from MyDVD 6, but I am beginning to suspect that the newer version does not have the functionality that I need.

Do you have the Videowave application? You should do your editing in this application, as redwagon stated above.

If you just have the stand-alone MyDVD application, right click the movie title, select Edit Movie. Go to Timeline view, and move the vertical line anywhere in the middle of the mpg file. Right-click on that line, do you see the Trim and Split options? You can use the first one to trim the movie, or you can split the movie at any point using Split.

Read post 3, the OP has the OEM HP version of My DVD. There is no Video Wave and everything else is limited.

There is also a limited version of a Video Editing program, I can't remember the name, that shows up in the Home page of the Roxio program with new HP computers. Of course no one here knows anything about that video editing program.

To the OP, use that video editing program or consider using Windows Movie Maker (already on your computer). If you are going to do a lot of video work, consider buying a full version of the program - Easy Media Creator 10. You could also try the trial version in this section of the forum if you are not running Vista. If you are running Vista, you MAY have some problems.
