Stretched video?Washed out.

nuvideo

Question

Regardless of the setting I use to export the video, BY REF, Self COntained or QT from Media100

or the VIDEO DVD --AUTOMATIC--16x9 or 4x3 the video is stretched and washed out.

I am using Toast 8 back from the update which is when all problems started.

Has anyone found a better product than Toast. It used to be good but now.......

I re-installed 8.03 and voila! the video was correct size.

Video is still badly washed out which of course is why so many people migrated to FCP.

Any suggestions appreciated.

This sounds like the 0 or 7.5 IRE issue with NTSC. Here is one discussion about this. Here is another on Ken Stone's excellent FCP site.

I believe Toast presumes a 7.5 IRE in the source video.

Appreciate the links and I tried to read them but I am NOT and engineer and a lot of that is over my head. I do however understand black levels, stretch etc. The issue is simply with toast. ALL my video exported from Media100 looks great---UNTIL it is either displayed as DISC IMAGE or burned onto a DVD and then played back. So logic tells me there is some setting that I have incorrectly set in Toast that is raising the black level from 7.5 ire to something else. If you have any idea what that setting might be I would be grateful. SO much so that I will take you for a beer when I come over to Mac court to watch the Dux take on the Bruins this thrusday!

I appreciate the offer and I'd seriously consider it if I had any certain information about all this trouble you're having with Toast. I do accept that your video appears washed out after Toast's encoding. But I still believe there is something amiss with the source video that is causing this. If it was common for Toast to create washed out video DVDs there would be thousands of posts here about it and yours is the first I recall. The only thing I've read about resulting in washed out pictures is using the wrong IRE settings. Toast, however, has no adjustment for this. I may be mistaken about whether IRE has anything to do with the problem you're experiencing because I think it is an issue in digitizing analog video rather than in encoding digital video.

In a weak attempt at humor, I hope these frustrations with Toast will make you more energetic and louder cheering for the Ducks!

Sorry I haven't been of more help.

The Preview Toast window does not look 4x3. Seems to be 16x9 yet can't find place to change size except left menu side and it does noting regardless of setting????
