Compressed Movies Have Jitter

mkkroeger

Question

Sometimes (but not always) when I copy a dual layer DVD to a single layer DVD, the compressed movie/slide shows/etc will not play correctly on my Sony DVD player, Sansui DVD player, or my PC's Samsung DVD player.

Typical problems are freezes, jitters or jerky motion every few minutes. However, I have a Philips 642 DVD player (also plays Divx) that always plays these files correctly - so it does not appear to be the media. I have varied the burn speed and that does not seem to matter.

It doesn't matter if I create iso images or the folders/etc. I have never seen this problem on uncompressed copies.

I have Easy Media 7.5, XPSP2, Dell XPS400 with Philips Dual Layer burner.

Thanks.

Actually it does look like a media problem… You did not say what media you were using but if it is 'dash' try 'plus' or vice versa to see if that improves compatibility.

I have tried Memorex -R, Verbatim -R and +R. When I burn the same ISO file that creates the jitters, I have seen the same behavior in the same spot regardless of the media or number of copies (as one test, I created 8 DVDs that all behaved the same).

How can media be fine on the Philips but not on the other players? Thanks for the response

What is different between this one and the others? Age , condition, ability to play home burned DVD. Since it plays on one, and probably your computer and not on the others, the issue is the players and not the program or how you burned the disc. First suggestion is to burn the project to an iso file and then copy that to disc. A lot of people have success in doing that. The second thing is to burn the discs at somewhat less than the maximum. Some people find that this helps.

You might try to get a can of compressed dry air from the electronics show and blowing out those other players. Be careful, you don't know what has crawled inside the player. You can also try a leans cleaner aka as a CD player cleaner. This is a CD that has brushes glued to the surface to clean the lazier lens. Again follow the instruction.

Post back to let us know which one solved your problem.

Home movies that took a little longer than 2 hours. Actually, the problem seems to have been corrected by applying the available 7.5 patch. I used the software's "Check for updates" which always reported that no new updated were available. When I registered so I could post my original message, I discovered that there was an update available. I applied the update with no problems and made a copy of what was bad before. It was OK. So I guess the udpate fixed the problem.
