My Dvd Video Capture

Can someone please help. I have wasted hours and hours on this. When I try to capture video using a usb connected to my SONY camcorder I get the following:

1. When choosing the SONY usb device, I get a capture error that says no signal.

2. When using the computer microphone, I don't get any sound.

The requirements state that to capture from a DV (tape) camcorder you have to use a Firewire connection. USB does not work. If you have another type of camcorder, list the type, make and model.
