Problem Cleaning Emc9 On Vista

teo

Question

Hi all,

in my new dell laptop the pre-installed EMC 9 did not work properly. I am trying to unistall it in order to reinstall it afterward, possibly adding the 9.1 version. I went half way through of the instructions found in this forum, but I am now stuck because "I don't have the permission" to delete two files in the Program Files/Roxio/Drag to Disc folder. They are the Shellex.dll and the ShellRes.Dll. How to I get this permission? Or else, is it really essential that I get rid of them in order to reinstall EMC 9?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Teo,

If you have a preinstalled [OEM] version of EMC 9.0, it won't accept the 9.1 updater. The updaters only work on the retail versions of EMC 9.0

Do you have the CD you'll need to reinstall EMC 9? If so, which version is it?

Brendon

When I turn the laptop on I have the only option of logging in with my name, which I assumed was the administrator. How can I make sure this is actually the case?

Good to know that the 9.1 won't work with the preinstalled 9.0. I do have the installation CD Dell gave me with the laptop and it says 9.0 on it.

Thank you,

teo

Good, I was worried that Dell might not have given you the CD you need. If it's 9.0 I hope it will work okay in Vista, as others have found it takes 9.1 for everything to work properly in Vista.

If you only have your name to log in with, you should have administrator access. If not, you could try going into Safe Mode and logging into the Administrator account there. I expect you will need a password for that account though. I don't know How Dell set the machine up, or if they give you an Administrator Account password.

I don't know if those DLLs will prevent reinstallation - try it and see.

Brendon
