Thanks. Roxio's 80% solution did not help. I did both items 5 & 6, neither helped.

No problem regarding posts.

Ah Ha, perhaps a clue. :)

I know you did a lot of fixes but did you try item 5? Not exactly the same problem but it may help.

Title: You have a general issue burning your disc.

Application: Easy Media Creator 8

Applicable Operating Systems:

Windows 2000 Professional

Windows XP Home / Pro / Media Center

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Issue:

When burning a CD or DVD, you receive an error or burning does not complete.

Solution:

Burning errors can happen for a variety of reasons. Roxio has found that doing the following steps resolves about 80% of all burning issues. Please give all these steps a try and see if it fixes your writing problems.

  1. Update your drive's firmware/drivers. Most companies regularly update their firmware and drivers. If you are unsure what model your burner is and its firmware, click here to find out.
  2. Enable DMA. Direct Memory Access enables better efficiency of data. For more info, check how to enable DMA.
  3. Be sure that you're media is clean, unused, and the recommended media from your burner's manufacturer. Try a different brand, preferably a name brand, if you continue to have problems.
  4. If your burner is external, make sure it is connected directly to the computer via USB/Firewire and not a hub or other other device like a sound card.
  5. If you have a MyDVD 5.x (and up), DVDit! 5.x (and up), or RecordNow! 6 (and up), you may need to update the Sonic Record Engine .
  6. Finally, a reinstall of the burners drivers may also help.
    • Go into My Computer-->Control Panel-->System.
    • Click the "Hardware" tab, then "Device manager".
    • Expand "DVD/CD-ROM Drives", then select your burner and uninstall it by right clicking on it.
    • Reboot.

Sorry if I was obtuse before. It's been a rough week.

Here's the system: HP 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, HP Lightscribe 640C Internal DVD/CD Combo, Samsung DVD-ROM SD 616E, 250 GB HDD, Sonic Record Now Version 7 Build 720B42F, Muvee Auto Producer Ver. 3.5, ArcSoft Showbiz Ver. 2.2.2.35

Tried disabling Drag to Disc. In addition, the program only fails to recognize a blank DVD in the My DVD program. No problem copying DVD from the Copy Disc program. Its recognized there. All programs mentioned above were on the machine when I was using Roxio 7.5 (and earlier versions), with no problems.

What other DVD burning/decrypting software do you have on your computer? You said the other posts were not helpful but it would help others to answer questions that were asked to eliminate those as a potential. i.e, the question regarding packet writing software. Try disabling all of the one you have (Roxio's is Drag to Disc) sometimes they do take control of your burner.

Moe information on your computer would also be appreciated. Add the information to your signature (My Controls) so you don't have to enter it over and over.

I reviewed the other threads that you posted, but they were not helpful. I do not have Ver. 6 installed.

I have no problem with the drive (HP Lightscribe) recognizing that a disc is in the drive in any of the Roxio programs other than the DVD Burning program. Thus, I have no problem burning an audio CD, for example. It's only burning a DVD when it tells me that there's no disc in the recorder. It doesn't matter what media I use, I have single layer, double layer and lightscribe discs, none of which get recognized. The pre-8 version of Roxio was no problem.

A Nero program came with that burner. Did you install it? Is it able to recognize a disc in the drive? If neither can do it, it may be a Windows setting. I'm sure that you did not install two packet writing programs on your computer, if so and even if they ar disabled, they will cause a problem. Have you tried removing the drive using Windows and they rebooting to allow Windows to reinstall it? Do you have Windows XP service pack 2?

If you open the label software that you use and put a light scribe disc in your drive with the lightscribe surface down (towards the laser), does it recognize that it is a lightscribe disc?

I looked that the HP site and could not find new firmware for that drive. Have you tried? What brand of media are you trying? What type (+R , - R, or a RW) ?

So...... no one was ever able to provide help or get us some answers?

Having the same problem here, although its no problem copying DVD discs or creating CD's. Only when trying to burn a new DVD does it say that the disc drive is empty (with single discs). Different error message with double sided discs, and disc drive empty message on Lightscribe discs, too.

I have an HP 840i drive.
