Sad Day For Consumers - Toshiba Gives Up

They can charge what they want but if consumers don't want to pay for it, they'll have to reduce the prices. As tight as the economy is getting, I think 2008 is going to be the year of the savy spender. I know it will be for me anyway.

I just don't see how Blueray is a winner just because the movie industry says so. There are NO Blueray drives for computers and only the PS3 has a Blueray drive. When it comes to Drives, it would seem that HD DVD has more of those out there. Supported by XBox 360 and many HP computers are sold with HD DVD drives built it. It's like collusion in the movie industry. Perhaps the Government should step in and FORCE the movie industry to support both. If nothing else for the sake of competition. I don't care what anyone says - competition does bring the price down! History has proven that in all cases. Just look at the phone and cable industry. Less competition = higher prices

I totally agree but just wish there was more competition in the cable industry. Our prices are going up min. $6 in March and we're getting nothing for it. The blame is on higher fuel costs. I guess the $600 per person cash infusion is supposed to cover the higher fuel costs huh?

I won't be upgrading to any of the new drives until the dust settles as well as the prices. With my not so big TV's, I really don't get the full benefit of this great technology anyway.

I was wanting to get into HD DVD's but I'm not sure now.

I saw a HD player for less than $150,the cheapest BlueRay seems at least in the neighborhood of $400-$450.

I've seen a couple BlueRay drives for computers and they're at least $500.

Not a price I'm willing to pay to get into HD for DVD's.

No sense buying a HD player if they're on the way out. It'd be the same thing as having a discount BetaMax..lol

I think everyone should go out buy up all the HD DVD stuff and hope that Toshiba changes their mind. :) I had my experience with HD and didn't like it all (Sony HC7 $1200 camcorder). I got rid of it. I won't be buying Blueray until I can buy a burner for under $100 and blanks for under $1 each. I'm sure that will be LONG time away.

I simply have no need for Blueray or HD playback unless I can make my own home videos and play them back. If I want to purchase a movie (which is rare), a regular DVD is fine with me.

Yeah,I'm more into it for the home market not a camcorder.I don't have one and don't plan on getting one.I do however have an extensive collection of DVDs and have thought of getting into HD.It's just that at this time the price (for BlueRay) is out of my range.

I think more people are worried about the TV switch over than buying Blueray. LOL

I'm not worried about the switchover. Just aggravated. I think I'm going to start looking in pawn shops for a good analog TV to replace my current one that is getting a little flaky after 11 years. I couldn't care less about the whole HD/Bluray thing. And wide screen really annoys me to no end. Grrrr . . .

Ggrussell,

I don't understand your comment about no Blu-ray drives for computers. Please explain! I know there ARE Blu-ray drives available. LG makes three different models. They may be a bit pricey but Blu-ray drives are becoming more common in the up scale "media type" computers.

Your analog television, isn't going to get any signal about this time next year, unless you have a digital box connected to it.

I didn't mean 3rd party add ons that cost $500. I mean go down to Walmart, Staples, Office Depot, etc., and buy a computer with a Blueray burner NOT PLAYER, already built into it. I'm sure Sony would have one. DOH! And someone told me that Dell has one. Can't find either of those on the shelves.

Yet I can find HD DVDs players and burners jsut about anywhere they sell HPs.

I've known all about that for nearly two years . ;) Just don't see what's so great about HD . . . not into the visual/auditory WOW! If I can see any kind of image and get the audio, I'm happy.

Sister,

I bought a 42" 1080I 16.9 widescreen HDTV about six years ago along with a Onkyo 6.1 surrond sound system. I'm as impressed as I was when I saw my first color TV set in the sixties. Don't know a better way to explain it..audio and visual just awesome. I know everyone isn't into "visual/auditory WOW! " :)
