Just Installed Toast 8 And Can't Burn At All

arothmanmusic

Question

I purchased and installed Toast 8 tonight and burned one audio disc without a problem. I have a G4 tower with an internal Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 "Superdrive".

I opened iTunes to listen to the burned disc, and while I was listening, iTunes prompted me for a download of their latest version. I downloaded it, along with the latest security release from Apple. After rebooting, I can't burn anything. Same project, same media, but now I get an error:

The drive reported an error.

Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST

Sense Code = 0x20

INVALID COMMAND OPERATION CODE

It then pops an additional message... "Couldn't set up the track for writing."

I can't burn in Toast or in iTunes. Did my drive just happen to die during the reboot, or did the software update kill my burner? Is there something I can do? I need to burn about 75 discs by March 1...

One thing to try is to shut down your Mac and wait about 10 minutes before restarting. That might force something to reset. Also check with Apple to see if they have a firmware update for that Superdrive. You might also run Disk Utility's repair and/or DiskWarrior.

Turned out to be a dead drive... couldn't burn from any apps at all. I've got a new iMac and it's all working just fine now ;)

Aloha arothmanmusic,

I sure hope mine is NOT dead. I'm using an iMac Core Duo 2.0GHz (bought in 2006, so fairly new) with Toast 8 (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 Super Drive) and I got almost the same error window:

The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST

Sense Code = 0x24

INVALID FIELD IN CDB

When I clicked the OK button, a second window popped up, stating:

Couldn't setup the track for writing.

This is the first time I've experienced his error. I have all three Indiana Jones movies and noticed some artifacts on Raiders of the Last Ark. As I ripped all of them for writing to archive DVDs (and saving the originals in near pristine condition), I wasn't too worried - I could always re-burn from the image to another archive disc. The only difference is that I am now on a Mac - when I originally ripped the movies, I was using a PC. I haven't had problems with other rips. Could there be any other possible explanations?

Mahalo in advance for your assistance,

Sorry despite the fact that you own these DVD's, what you are doing is technically not legal. I'll have to shut this thread down.

Keep in mind, fair and legal are obviously opposites in this situation, but that is not something I have control over.
