Backup Locks Up.

There are 2 different backup programs included, might help to know which one you are using???

But for either one, I would try either Repair (Add/Remove Programs) or just unistall/reboot/reinstall.

I have the same problem with "Roxio Backup". I added a project for the "Documents and Settings" folder to backup all the documents and settings for all users. Now whenever starting the program, it immediately tries to calculate the size for this project and apparently loops (using all the CPU it can get). The dialog says "Retrieving backup size for backup project ..." It doesn't respond when I try to select "Cancel" from that dialog except to beep indicating that it is busy. Only way out is to go to Task Mgr and kill it.

I don't want to uninstall/reinstall because I have two other backup projects that I don't want to lose the history on. I assume that if the project history is not deleted with the uninstall, then it will have the exact same problem with this project after re-installing.

There must be another way to delete this project that it can't handle?

OK, I found where the project info is kept and managed to delete the offending project directory.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Roxio\Backup8\ has a directory for each backup project. I originally moved the directory for the offending project elsewhere (just in case the program got upset that it was gone). I started up Roxio Backup and the project was gone and it seems happy again. I then deleted the directory that I had moved aside.

I hope this helps someone else that finds themself in this situation. :)

I have a similar problem to the one described in this post.

I will try to explain what is going on.

I launched Roxio Creator Suite 8 and drilled to Roxio Backup.

And did a create new project.

(This is the first time I have used the Backup since I just installed Roxio Creator Suite 8).

I successfully created the project.

I desire to backup a partition (L) from a networked computer to partition (N) of the computer that has Roxio Creator Suite 8.

I recall setting something so as to verify files.

I answered "yes to all" regarding conversion to shorter names and

got the Folder Depth Validation warning

The project validation completed successfully.

(Burn list completed 100%)

I did "burn" at 12:42AM , but got the impression that nothing was happening. After waiting awhile, I did ctl-alt-delete and it showed that the program was not responding. I ended the tasks. When I launched the backup again, I got: Refreshing backup status for project 08-01-2006 Backup SOHO-E. As noted in previous post, this occurs every time when I go to Roxio backup.

I decided to reboot my PC and launced Roxio backup again.

This time, the process of refreshing the backup status completed.

I got the shorter names and Folder Depth stuff again, and was able to initiate the "burn" to the harddrive. The process started at 01:11 AM and completed at 04:39AM.

I looked at the history, and it appears that the first attempt is documented. I went to the partition that contains the backup and see the project folder, and within it I see 4 folders:

(1) $BAK001$ 12:42AM <=== 628MB contains a few folders that were backed up, must be corrupt due to my end-tasking the program as described above

(2) $BAK002$ 1:15AM <=== 16.8MB contains all of the folders I desired to be backed up

(3) $ROXIO$ 4:39AM

(4) Launch Retrieve 4:39AM

Before closing the Roxio program, all appeared "normal" in regard to this project. I do not recall what the status was, but I know it did NOT state Backup Needed. I recall when doing view/edit, I got 2 lines (one for the start time of 12:46 and the other with the 01:11). I closed the program

I launched the program, and got "Refreshing backup status for project 08-01-2006 Backup SOHO-E"

I waited for a few moments, and the task must have completed successfully since the box disappeared.

But now I have a status that a backup is needed, yet last backup = Tue Aug 1 01:11:37

I closed program, and relaunched, and am now locked up for the past 1/2 hour with the refreshing backup status !!!! I do a ctl-alt-delete and it shows Roxio Backup as running, and Roxio Creator 8 Suite Home as running. {note: am editing this post with an update. When I did an end task, I got "program not responding" message.}

Any help you can lend I will truly appreciate.

In summary, I have only 1 project existing, but a part of it is corrupt.

The backup (2nd attempt with this 1 project) completed successfully but everytime I go to Roxio Backup, "refreshing backup status" launches.

Thank you.

Kathie

Backup function locks computer every time. Will not calculated number of disks, etc.
