Continuous Reboots Plague Windows XP SP3 Users

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2302371,00.asp

<snip>

The problem appears to primarily affect AMD-based computers, though there are also some cases in which Intel-based machines will also run into trouble, Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft who now runs a Windows-related blog, wrote in a recent post.

"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se," Johansson wrote. "The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."

Well, that settles my questions, I will not be downloading it mainly because of not being able to retain Explorer 6, if I am understanding it correctly. Or does it mean if you have upgraded to 7 you can't go back after downloading SP3?

The latter Patty - if you have IER7 installed and then install SP3, it will lock IE7 in place

However, it will not install IE7 in the update process - even if it's a fresh install from a slipstreamed disc, nor will it install WMP11.

It will however install dotNET 3 (and you get an 'owner' account set up )

For what it's worth, I installed it a few days ago. It installed quickly and the reboot was odd with some interesting screens coming up during the reboot.

The computer was sluggish at first but after another reboot, all was fine. It's been fine since but I must say I'm glad I don't have an amd at this point or whatever odd configuration is needed to set up the reboot scenario (some sort of sys file).

I'm usually more paranoid about new things but decided to trust ms on this one.

Not understanding correctly. As Daithi says, if you insdtall SP3 on top of IE7 you won't have the option to uninstall IE7 should you want to revert to IE6.

However, the workaround is simple:

If you have IE 7 already installed but you want to have the option of uninstalling it after SP3 install:

1. uninstall IE7 (rolls back to IE 6)

2. Install SP3.

3. Install IE7

then you retain the option to uninstall IE 7 to revert to IE6 if you want to.

That's what I did, no prtoblems at all (but mine is an Intel CPU, not AMD)

Actually, I believe that Patty's IE 7 portion of her post, was a typo. I do believe she meant to type IE 6. She will correct me, if I am wrong, but if she is still running EMC 7.5, like I am, she doesn't have IE 7 on the computer that she is running, with EMC 7.5 installed.

Typo, what typo?:lol::lol:  Your right, Bruce, it was a typo and I just don't know if it is all that necessary to switch over until they make it impossible not to.

Will it run AutoCad 2000i? ;)

like the roll out of SP2 when it got released , who knows...

if you rember on SP2 release it killed about 50 apps inluding most of the microsts office products... its so new we would need to see, but its not like SP1 for vista that has a whole new core replacment for the OS, the SP3 is realy a refined colection of service packs and updates bundled in a nice installer

(or so they tell us)

I was actually asking about Linux.

Yes, SP2 did kill many apps when it first came out, but I believe that updates fixed most of them, if not all.
