Beer Is Cheaper Than Gas

Our local Abita Brewery paid $2.50 last year for hops and is paying $19 now due to the fields being used for corn. They expect the fall crop to drop the price to about $5 which is a big drop.

You're right about barley, again the fields are used to grow corn for ethanol and soybean for bio diesel.

Another fine example of people with the power to enforce decisions made without really understanding the problem - as in England when officials deemed that due to "Mad Cow" all cattle had to be slaughtered and incinerated - which was a disaster for shoemakers and other leatherworkers because ther was no leather.
