tringler
Hi, I recently installed a Samsung DVD-Writer, SH-S202J, in my computer. Am using Easy CD Creator Platinum 5 (version 5.3.5.10v). When I try to record a DVD I get this message, "No supported DVD-Recorders were detected on your system." I have updated the recorder to the latest firmware and it will read DVDs but not record. How do I find out from Roxio if my recorder is supported? Can't find anything out on there web site. And, if I were to upgrade to Easy Media 10, would my recorder be supported? Would appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks.
gi7omy
ECVD 5 used a table that it read to set the optical drive. There are ways to amend this so if you post the driver ID string, Brendon may be able to help you with that. ECD7 onwards used a dynamic setting that read from the drive firmwars and didn't rely on pre-written tables
Brendon
Easy CD Creator 5 uses an early form of Dynamic Drive Detection [DDD] which will pick up many modern drives, but if yours isn't recognized by DDR then the only way to fix this is with a registry edit. For that I need your Drive ID, which you can get from Windows Device Manager. Go into Device Manager and click on the small + alongside the DVD/CD icon. The entry will expand to show you the Drive ID(s) of your optical drive(s). I need to know exactly what it gives for your SH-S202J. Before you start on this, you need to know that version 5 will write only data DVDs, and not Video DVDs. If you are wanting to write Video DVDs, EMC 10 will support your drive. gi7omy
To see if the later versions work, why not try the 30 day free trial of EMC9 (there are a couple of bits missing but you will be able to see if the machine can cope with it) http://www.roxio.com/enu/promotions/landing/creator_trial/

PIII 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. Plenty of hard drive space. Thanks again. No, it's not what's needed. You appear to have gone too far. If you do what I detailed above you should get a display like this The ID of my first drive is BENQ DVD DD DW1640 and the second is HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H22N. What is displayed in Device Manager for yours, please? Regards, Brendon Oh, and as far as EMC10 goes, the requirements say * Windows Vista with 1.6 GHz Intel processor, 512 MB RAM * Windows XP with 500 MHz processor or faster; 128 MB RAM * 1 GB of free hard disk space for typical installation of all components * 1024x768, 16-bit color graphics card * DirectX 9 or higher compatible sound card and graphics card * Windows Media Player 10 or higher * Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher * DVD-ROM drive is required to install the software . . . but we've found them to be outrageously optimistic, so I really wouldn't want to try it on your machine. tringler
Thank you. This is what appears as you described. The first drive is HP CD-Writer+9300 and the second drive (the one I am having trouble with) is TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202J. That is all there is. I agree with you on EMC 10 for this computer. If I could find an older version of EMC, which one do you think would work the best on my computer. Tony
Brendon
Thanks Tony, that's what I needed. Version 535V will already know your CD-Writer+9300, and I should be able to work up an edit for the re-badged Samsung if you need it. It depends on what you want to do, as to which version is best for your circumstances. If you are just wanting to write data DVDs, then what you have will do nicely after the registry edit. If you want to create and write Video DVDs then you'll need to go to a higher version. Version 6 will do some of it, but has more bugs than an old dog has fleas according to many users. I personally like version 7.5 as a good stable package with a good transcoding of video, but you'll need to be running XP-SP1 or better, or Win2K-SP4 or better for that. Those who know say version 8's transcoder isn't so good. Version 9 is up there, but its system requirements are up there too * Windows XP Home/Pro/MCE (Service Pack 2), Windows XP Pro x64 Edition, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4 or later)* * For burning music and data discs: 500 MHz Intel® Pentium III or equivalent; 128 MB RAM * For DVD, slideshow or video authoring: 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent; 256 MB RAM * For real-time MPEG-2 capture and burning:1.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent; 256 MB RAM * For viewing DivX HD or H.264 video files in full screen mode: 2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent; 512 MB RAM * 7200 RPM hard disk drive recommended for video projects * 1 GB of free hard disk space for typical installation of all components * 1 GB of free hard disk space for every 5 minutes of video for video capture * Up to 9 GB of free hard disk space for copying DVD-Video** discs * 1024x768, 16-bit color graphics card; 24-bit or 32-bit true color recommended * DirectX 9 or higher compatible sound card and graphics card * QuickTime 7 or greater for burning of M4A files * Windows Media Player 9 or higher for Windows 2000 systems; Windows Media Player 10 or higher for Windows XP and Vista systems * Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher * CD-ROM drive to install the software * Internet connection required for registration, activation, product updates, and some features including photo sharing and Gracenote® MusicID™ support (to retrieve artist, album and track information). Any Internet charges are the user's responsibility. *Drag-to-Disc and CinePlayer do not run on Windows 2000 If you don't have the both the cash and the need for the latest in both hardware and software the choice is never simple, but I hope that helps some. Do you need the edit for the Samsung in the meantime? Regards, Brendon

Do you need the edit for the Samsung in the meantime? Regards, Brendon Thank you Brendon, I would only need this computer to write data DVDs, nothing else. I built the computer in 2001 for my daughter. She eventually went to a laptop and gave the desktop back to me. I am running XP-SP2 (Home edition) but rarely use the computer. Have been using it as more of a learning tool since am not very familiar with the Windows environment. I have been Mac based for 22 years as I am a printer and graphic artist. I do run Toast 9 on the Mac. However, with this, I can only burn cross platform or hybrid DVDs to run on a PC. This somewhat limits the amount of data I can record and have run into frequent errors. So, I think it would be best at this time to try a registry edit for the Samsung recorder. One other thing, when I installed the HP CD-Writer+9300 I also installed HP's recording software. This was before I went to ECDC 5. Could there be a conflict between the HP software software and Easy CD Creator 5? Should I uninstall the HP software? I really do appreciate your help and thank you again. Kind regards, Tony
Brendon
Hi Tony. Try this. I'm not sure how much Mediatek-LiteOn influence there is in that drive - the TSSTcorp ones seem to be two broad types - but I'm pretty sure this will work and I have some tweaks we can try if it doesn't. The registry edit aims to replace one of the existing Roxio entries with one tailored for your drive. Make sure your ECDC 5.3.5.10 is updated with the 535V drive Up patch, then run REGEDIT. (1) Press Ctrl-F (find) and search the registry for device001. When you find it, it should be displaying an entry for a GENERIC FREECOM48H drive (2) double-click device001, and an edit box should open with the entry for the Freecom drive highlighted in blue (3) paste the following line in to replace the Freecom entry TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202J,TSSTcorp,CDDVDW SH-S202J,DVD+-R/RW,cdrmmc.drv,178,,9 (4) Click OK to complete the edit, and then get out of the registry editor If all goes well, Easy CD Creator and Disc Copier should now recognize your SH-S202J. Direct CD won't, but that's no loss. Be aware that ECDC5 is old, and won't support all the capabilities of your newer drive. It will allow you to write data DVDs, but not Video-DVDs Please let me know how it works. Brendon

The REGEDIT string you provided work perfectly and I am very appreciative of all your kind help. I owe you and so does ROXIO. I doubt that they could survive without individuals like you to help them out. I burnt the first DVD in test mode and it was successful so I went ahead and recorded it. It worked perfectly. I was a little apprehensive about editing the registry since I know if it isn't done right you can have problems. So, I backed it up first just in case I did have a problem. Also, I downloaded "roxizap.exe" from your profile page just in case I find a copy of EMC7.5 and have to uninstall ECDC5. It appears that the HP software on this computer doesn't present a conflict with ECDC5 so will leave it alone for now. Again, thank you very very much for all of your help. sumdumgai
Cheers, Brendon Hello, Brendon. I've been reading posts regearding this topic and I wonder if you could help me as you seemed to have helped the original poster. I am having the same problem. I've have done numerous clean installs of ECDC 5.5.10v (including ecdc_v5.3.5.10_plt_enu.exe and driveup5.3.5v.exe) but ECDC still does not recognize my DVD (Windows XP/SP3 does). My DVD drive is: AOPEN DUW1616/ARR. I do not see this listed in Registry, although at device283 I see: AOPEN DUW1608/ARR,AOPEN,DUW1608/ARR,DVD+-R/RW,cdrmmc.drv,178,,8. Can you please help me with a registry change that would allow ECDC to find my drive? Thanks.
Brendon
Hi, You seem to have done most of my work for me already The DUW1616 is the next model up from the DUW1608, so your best bet is to hijack the entry in your registry for the 1608. Edit device283, and in the two places there where you see 1608, replace it with 1616. Click on OK to finalize the edit, and then go out of the editor. There's no other values you can change in the entry to accommodate the 1616, since the present values are about as far as you can go with version 5. Should you ever want to restore your registry to the old values, [like, if you bought a 1608] you can either edit that entry again, or just re-apply the 535V drive update. Please let me know how it goes. Regards, Brendon

Brendon
As long as you DON'T install InCD, Nero shouldn't interfere with ECDC5, at least up to Nero 7. I haven't tried Nero 8 with it. As far as drive recognition goes, please bear in mind the age of Easy CD & DVD Burning against current versions of Nero and Roxio software.
