If you are working in VideoWave, select the individual slide on which you want to add text. Click on Add Text Effect and choose an effect from the Add Text Effect dialog box. Choose "Add Text to Internal text track of selected panel"

Then edit your text and click Done (lower left).

If you are using the SlideShow assistant, I don't know if you can add text unless you bring it into VideoWave.

When creating a slideshow, I want to have a solid color panel with a title before going to the pictures. How can I do this?

Select the image/video where you want the color panel to be. Right click and select Insert Color Panel from the context menu. Add your text to the internal track of the color panel.
