Stereo Editing

Zip Salty

Question

I've input stereo recordings from my Sony MD into CD Spin Doctor via a Tascam US-122. The recording is represented in Spin Doc as one track - combining the left and right channels. The problem is that I want to raise the volume of the left channel while leaving the right channel alone. However, as far as I can tell, I don't have that option. It looks like I can only edit the track as a whole, so that if I raise the volume, I raise in on the left and the right channels at the same time. Is there any was to mess individually with the left and right channels on one track? Thanks.

Go to Audio Midi Setup in your utilities folder where there is the ability to adjust left and right input channels separately.

If that doesn't work out, you can use the Gain setting in Toast (either in the Audio or Convert windows) to adjust the left and right channel levels after you've completed the capture with Spin Doctor.

Thanks. That's closer to what I need but it still only allows me to treat each channel as a whole. What if, for example, I want to increase the volume of one channel at only one particular point or remove it entirely?

One option I saw is as follows: (my problem with this one is (I'm very new) I don't know what the sound editor is. I can't even get a track from CD Doc to Garage Band (is this the sound editor?)

1. load stereo file into the sound editor.

2. adjust the balance so the left channel is on zero (click the left end of the balance line, drag to the bottom, repeat at the right end)

3. right click on the track listed in the left pane, click export, save as right channel.

4. adjust the balance so that the right channel is on zero (click left end, drag to top, repeat at right end)

5. export the track, save as left channel

6. Right click on the track listed in the left pane, click delete (which will also delete the original file)

7. load the two channel files and place them in layer one and two. You should now be able to edit them separately, then remix (the layer that is highlighted is the one showing on the main time line, where you can edit it, independently of the other layer).

I also found that maybe I should get shareware programs called "Audacity" or "Gold Wave"

Neither Toast nor Spin Doctor are audio editing applications although each has some features found in audio editors. A very highly regarded audio editor for Mac is Bias Peak. Many people also like Sound Studio. I'm not sure how Audacity compares but I know it is popular. I've never heard of Gold Wave. Incidentally, QuickTime Pro has some audio editing features, too.
