Videowave Hangs At Frame 16 Transcoding Dvd

evergreen97

Question

Hello,

I have DVDs backed up to my hard drive (personal collection owned and paid for) which I wish to compress to WMV9 and make media center extender v1 compatible. Problem is, when I have a DVD which has AC3 stereo sound track Videowave 10 hangs at frame 16 and will not transcode the video.

If I use various freeware tools to downmix and transcode the AC3 5.1 files to stereo WAV, add the WAV file to the Videowave production as a music track, and mute the native soundtrack in Videowavce - I am able to transcode the file successfullly without the hang.

So I conclude that the issue is with the stereo AC3 soundtrack.

I could swear I have been able to transcode DVD files with stereo AC3 soundtracks before, but I'm not sure. I'm concerned that some other filter from some other software package subsequently installed after EMC10 is overriding the Videowave preferred filter.

Additional info: when using Graphedit to see which filters are being used to play these files I see Demux = Sonic HD Demuxer, Audio Decoder = Ligos MPEG/AC-3/LPCM Audio Decoder, and Video Decoder = NVIDIA Video Decoder. I'm suspicious of the Ligos Decoder...not sure where that one came from - Roxio or somewhere else.

Help?

Joe

Render is under: Tools – Options – Render

Default is Hardware, so unless you have already changed it, try Software.

Sorry for the delay in response - had email notification set wrong and didn't come back to check for responses.

I had hardware render set.

Just tried software render - same issue.

Any other ideas?

Greatly appreciate the help! Joe

Next step would be the Clean Install to make sure there is not a corruption within the program. – Here

Before I go ripping Roxio's guts out of my machine (I know the entrails are messy), is it useful information to know that I can successfullly output to MPEG-2 for DVD format, then transcode to WMV using WMV9 640x480 VBR profile? (note: I get the grey "Encoding" view in the Render window when rendering from the VOB set to the MPG file using MPEG-2 for DVD profile, rather than the video being displayed in the Render window when I choose this output option).

That means no re-encoding is going on, which is a good thing.

I confirmed today that my issue was introduced after EMC 10 was installed initially. I tried transcoding DVDs that I has previously been able to transcode to WMV9 successfully - sure enough, hangs on frame 16. Mute the audio and its good to go.

So my conclusions are:

- VideoWave is not able to transcode stereo AC3 audio from VOB to WMV9

- I must have "stepped on" Roxio's default software (directshow filter?) when I installed some other software

Additional info:

- VideoWave is able to transcode the stereo AC3 audio from VOB to MPEG-2

- VideoWave Production / Panel properties shows "Sonic Cinemaster Audio Decoder 4.3" as the Audio decoder - no idea if this is the default

As I have worked on this, the workaround I described above actually adds a couple of hours to a single DVD transcode (MPEG-2 transcode + slower WMV9 transcode).

Before I carpet bomb EMC10 off my machine and re-install the entire application, I'm hopeful someone out there has suggestions for a "surgical strike" to remove or de-prioritize the audio filter that is likely causing this issue. Please advise!

Thanks - Joe

PS: I would post a screenshot of the filtergraph that is used to playback this vob if I could figure out how and if it would be helpful. If helpful, please advise how to post an image from my PC?

Yes, but any ideas why I able to do the WMV9 transcode using the "not re-encoded" MPG file? I guess I could be happy that I have found a workaround, but it adds about 10 mins and several more steps to the process which is already time consuming.

Any ideas or should I drop it?

OEM came with the pc, Roxio EMC Version 10?

cd

EMC Version 10 - Retail.
