Installed Xp And Now Video Card Not To Spec

shantz24

Question

I recently switched from vista home prem to xp home and i installed all the correct drivers, I have no yellow "!" in device manager but when I try to use disc copier video compilation or i try to open my dvd it says my video card does not meet the minimum specs. When I was using vista there was no problem. I have a gateway mt3705. I know it has integrated graphics and isnt the best for video work but it worked just fine with vista it was just a little slow and that was fine with me. I need to convert some wmv files to dvd and burn them with menus but i am stuck. The chipset is radeon xpress m200 and my driver version is 8.283.0.0. I see version 8.6 is on ati's website but i forget how to use .exe driver files on a gateway. its not as simple as running it. could it be a driver issue? any ideas? thanks in advance.

I believe that you have a VISTA certified PC and not a XP certified PC. Your video processor and system memory were designed to work with VISTA. The VISTA video drivers are much different than the XP drivers.

I would restore the BIOS back to factory settings, and then restore VISTA and the original programs. You did take backups?

Dave - you are really drifting way out of sight

Vista certification on hardware is just that that stuff will run with Vista installed - it's a higher spec than XP, hence the 'certification'

A computer certified for Vista will be able to run any other OS - Linux, Solaris - even OS2/Warp if you can find drivers

The BIOS doesn't care one way or the other WHAT OS is installed with one exception - when it asks if a Plug and Play OS is installed (this is a relic from OS2 days)

The problem that shantz is having is a driver one - nothing else

shantz - go here and download the mx3702 drivers (according to what info I have gleaned they should work

Dave - a computer is just a box of electronic components - it doesn't CARE what OS is installed

All Gateway are doing is obfuscating by only providing Vista drivers. The gizmo itself will work quite happily with XP - even DOS, Windows 3.1, 95, 98 - PROVIDED the drivers are found and that's where Gateway are shrouding the issue.

All that needs to be done is to identify the hardware and get the appropriate XP drivers from another source

I repeat - there is no such animal as a 'Vista only computer'

Usuallly works

That would have been my next suggestion (to totally remove all video drivers and try again)

What might just help is a re-install from scratch of XP and ONLY use the 3702 drivers this time (so that theer are no Vista drivers to mess things up

yea i know that my model number was never released for xp. but like i said its the same thing as the mx3702. those are the drivers i used. i used the video driver for the mx3702 and then when roxio wouldnt work i downloaded the one from ati's website and installed it.in my research others have done this too with no reported problems. so if i have all the correct drivers what could be the issue? roxio? o and my bios has never been updated.

well i downloaded the file and i ran it but like i thought it didnt install. but i remembered how i did it before in vista, had to extract it and point the install to the .inf file. i also updated the directx to 9c. still same message. i see in my display properties and advanced it says my video memory is 64 mb which is correct but in vista it would allocate more if needed. can this be setup to do this in xp? or does anyone have any other ideas? i dont get it though because my old desktop with xp only had a 64 mb card in it and roxio ran fine.

There is a big difference between 64 MB of Graphics Memory and 64 MB shared System Memory - GDRAM is a lot faster at tossing pixels around and doesn't need to be shared with the normal system memory

What date was on the DirectX 9.0c files? MS never changed the version number - just the dating

You could try using Software Rendering and see if that works

the date was july 3rd. and i know there is a difference between dedicated and integrated graphics but any idea why it worked fine on the laptop with vista and not xp? how can i change it to software rendering? i thought of that but when i try opeing mydvd it says it will check my settings and then tells me to upgrade my video card and closes. i remeber those settings being in mydvd, i cant afford a new computer. if this doesnt work are there any free options? i love roxio but i cant go back to vista because of the instability even with clean installs and updates. ill use xp for a long time. im out of ideas

edit....when i try to open mydvd it says it will profile my video card to tune the application and i click ok and it tells me my video card diagnosis failed and the application cannot run. and closes

I've seen some pretty crappy video chips run this program and most, but not all will. If you have a video chip control panel, use that to set the video performance to best performance and away from best appearance. See also if you can set the video chip to program controlled anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. You can make those changes using Windows but it is easier if you have a video control panel. Right click anywhere on an open area of your desktop and see if you get something with the manufacturer control panel for ATI or Radion.

tried tweaking the settings in the catalyst control center and nothing changed...same error messages. i also tried opening videowave and it pops up with the same message as when i try to open mydvd and then closes. is it normal to work under one os and not another? i dont want to quit using roxio but i need this done. any free suggestions? i wanted menus but ill even skip that if i have to. i appreciate the suggestions so keep them coming.

mine has bios version 83.06. and it shipped with vista on it but i got it a month after vista came out. if i remember it is identical to the mx3702 which shipped xp. i used all the mx3702 drivers when i installed xp. same chipsets, mine just came with 1 gig of ram and 100 gig hdd where the 3702 was 512 and 60 gig. i did change the uma buffer to 128 in the bioa and that shows up in the properties tab but didnt fix the problem. the only thing i havent tried is to update xp. i have taken a very simplistic approach to my laptop so i wasnt going to upgrade to sp2 or anything. could that do anything?

EMC 9 was the first version to require SP2, I believe.

It may run under SP1, but some programs may not work properly.

I didn't see any information on your Gateway PC in support of XP. However, you could try XP sp2 and see what it will do for you. Create a restore point just in case you have to go back. The XP sp2 service pack should do that but sometimes bad things happen.
