How To Capture Vhs To Laptop

dollnut

Question

I don't run Vista. Lets see if it's the same a XP. Click start, run, type in, dxdiag, click ok. Now click the display tab, what does it list for device? Now post your question in EMC 10, AV Capture/Output !

It lists Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family with the main driver igdumd32.dll.

The software is the retail EMC Ste 10 version. I have an HP C769US laptop computer with Dual Core Processor (1.73 GHZ) 250 GB hard drive with the Vista 32-bit OS and 2.0 GB RAM. I don't know where to find the video card info?

A good starting point. http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/capture/intro.htm

Next your Laptop spec's and any software's minimum system requirements.

Most laptops are built with poor on board video chips instead of a dedicated video card.

Please post your questions in the forum. Include your Roxio EMC Version #, OEM came with the pc or bought retail version and some system specs from the pc. Brand name and model #, processor size, video card or chip info and driver date, hard disk space, operating system, amount of ram.

What is the best cable to use to transfer video from VHS to a laptop computer? I need an S-Video to USB cable. What works with Roxio?

Your fairly limited in what you can do - you will have to capture the video to the hard drive first and then use Roxio on the captured file

Pinnacle make a "Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro" (a USB TV tuner with RCA and S-Video connections) which will give you the S-VHS input for the laptop. See here for details

I have a good VCR already. I just need to know what capture cable (cord) works with Roxio Suite 10.

You can't just use a cable. There needs to be an actual hardware device in your computer that your VCR will connect to.

This could be an internal PCI card or an External USB 2.0 device.

Either way the cable could either be an S-Video or RCA's depending on the outputs on the VCR.

What I gave you was a link to connect the VCR to the laptop - you need some way to connect and that's about the only option that I know of. You may be able to find a PCMCIA card, but it's doubtful (most makers have gone to USB)

Just a bit more background information......

Your VCR is putting out an analog signal and what everyone is telling you is that you need a device that converts that analog signal to a digital signal that your computer can use.

You probably don't have a video card on that computer. It would be under Device Manager, Display Settings. Type in Video Card in Windows Help and that should point you in the correct direction.

You need hardware the converts the analog video from the VCR to digital video. EMC 10 Deluxe comes with Pinnacle's DVC100 which should work fine with the laptop. You can also buy it separately at retail stores like Best Buy or maybe Staples. It has composite and S-video inputs plus stereo audio inputs. You plug the VCR into this device and then the device plugs into the computer.

There are many other brands that should work as well.

Thanks, guys!! That helps a lot. I am new at tranferring from analog to digital. My only other experience is with a VCR/DVR combo but you cannot change anything from one to the other and it shuts off after 20 minutes. Thanks again. I will let you know how it works.
