Wmp 11

Question

I have a Dell 4550 with 2.66Ghz P4, I Gb ram, 256Mb Nvidea 5700 AGP, 160Gb H/D. I am running XP-Home SP3 with all updates and drivers.

Yesterday I purchased and downloaded Roxio EMC 10.1 and ran the install program with a Typical Installation option. After the installation completed and I re-started my computer (which now forced a Login when I did not previously have to!) I ran the Suite and found that the couple of programs that I tried (EMC Classic and Cine player) seemed to work just fine. However, when I run Winodows Media Player 11 it's funtionality has been crippled. When I try to run certain MPG video files it shows a message saying it is acquiring codec/codec acquired but when it continues to play there is no sound. Certain other video files won't play at all. Also When Internet Explorer or Firefox try to run the WMP Plugin it just says ready but will not play the video.

Now this is a similar problem that I experienced when I Installed Pinnacle Studio a few years ago. Then the problem was that Studio replaced certain windows files. I was advised that renaming them would solve the problem and it did. The problem surfaced again three years later and as I had forgotten which files were causing the problem, the easiest (only way!) way to resolve it was to uninstall Studio, whereupon everything returned to normal.

You can imagine my dismay when this problem surfaced with the installation of EMC 10.1 as I imagined that we had progressed beyond those bad old days. Anyway, the situation so far is that I have run the uninstall program and WMP 11 has had it's functionality restored.

What's going on here? I don't really want to pay for a product and then spend two or three days looking for why it does not work with it's fellow programs.

Any Ideas?

Shaun

The 'log-in' is caused by Microsoft's dotNET 2 - to remove that, go to control panel, users and delete the NET account

The WMP11 problem is a different matter - WMP11 is a Vista backport and has caused problems with other earlier programs (so far we've had no reports of problems with EMC10). However, you should be aware that WMP11 is very heavy on DRM and can cause problems if it isn't sure of the file source.

What may have happened is that EMC10 has overwritten a codec that WMP11 was looking for. Try re-installing WMP11 and see if that replaces whatever it is and, also, try using gspot to check what codecs may be needed and manually add those

OK, I saw the dotNET 2 account earlier and have now removed that and have normal startup without the need for login.

I am a little more cautious about the WMP 11 problem. My experience with a similar problem earlier in the year, when Pinnacle Studio was causing WMP not to function in EXACTLY the same manner, was not resolved by re-installing WMP 11. It was only when I uninstalled Pinnacle Studio that everything returned to normal. I am sure that all necessary codecs are already on my computer, especially as I installed the K-Lite codec pack a couple of years ago. Of course, I have tried (and still use) Media Player Classic (freeware) which runs all files without issue (except WMV with DRM). However, I like WMP 11 and need it to view the plugins on IE and Firefox.

Cheers.

You do know of course that the K-Lite pack updates every couple of months and one installed a 'couple of years ago' will be well past its sell-by date

As I said, check what codecs are needed using gspot (available free) from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/. It's perfectly possible that you may need new codecs

Personally I will NOT 'update' to WMP11 for a lot of reasons - incompatibility with other programs for a start and the excessive DRM that it uses (and it does nothing that 9 or 10 can't do)

From my point of view, although the K-Lite codec pack installation may be a couple of years old, all my video and sound files work flawlessly in Windows Media Player 11, Media Player Classic and Quick Time. It is onlr after EMP 10.1 is installed that the problems arise and disappear as quickly when it is uninstalled. My instinct tells me that it must be something the EMC 10.1 is doing at install that is crippling WMP 11.

I already have Gspot thank you and a great little utility it is.

Cheers.

As you yourself pointed ouit, WMP11 took a severe attack of hiccups with Pinnacle and is now doing the same with EMC 10.

Logic would dictate that, if it's having difficulties with two totally unrelated programs, that the fault lies in WMP11 and not with the apps

Well, to me, it seems that files are being directed to different codecs than the ones installed with either WMP or K-Lite codec pack. With Pinnacle the support team there told me that their program substitutes one of the Windows files with one of its own. I was advised by them to rename the Windows file to the same name as theirs. This I did and all was well. I wondered whether we are seeing a similar situation with EMC 10.1.

If you've renamed a file, that might be a problem.

As I suggested in your other post..... have you tried Roxio Tech Support?

Go ask Microsoft just WHY their program is so messed up that it can't work with two different apps from two different makers.

There is one common factor in your problem - that's WMP11

Why should I blame Microsoft's WMP when it works flawlessly beforehand. Why should they try to resolve an issue that is caused by a third party's changing of the rules, however well meant

Look, I am not bashing EMC 10.1 for goodness sake, I want it to work but in harmony with WMP and not just excusively as I need WMP for the Internet browser plugins and WMV files. WMP was there before EMC and EMC has changed something in it's install. Media Player Classic does not stop WMP working, the DivX player doesn't either, so why can't Roxio do the same?

You are blaming Roxio and Pinnacle for a fault with WMP11

That's the bottom line and I have better things to do than try to argue with anyone

If you cannot understand that WMP11 is a VISTA program backported, then there's no point in continuing to try to get you to see any sense

You have a faulty OS - that's all there is to it
