Vob Access Problem

Annoyed

Question

I recently upgraded to Toast 8.4. When I attempt to burn a video, it fails with the following message: "The file VTS_02_01.VOB can not be accessed (Data fork, -39). All the files I've tried (imports from TIVO) fail with the same message (with a different ".VOB" file). Rebooting doesn't help. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I tried it and it worked. Your help, much appreciated.

It seems I declared victory too soon. I tried the suggested solution and managed to create one DVD, but that's it, the error message has appeared on all subsequent attempts. I've rebooted and tried different files to be burned - nothing works. HELP

This exists in Toast 9 as well and is much worse there. I posted details a couple of times, but some of the posts tend to get deleted (don't ask me why... :-)

The error has nothing to do with particular files and happens randomly - if you start Toast multiple times with a saved .disc file and then export to .image then it may/will happen at different stages/percentages and if you're lucky it will work sooner or later.

The error gets worse if you "do" something with Toast (like setting up options etc.) before you start to export. This leads me to the guess that it is probably caused by uninitialized variables. The more you use Toast the more "random" values will be in memory and the more likely a single variable will have garbage values to start with. If you just launch Toast, then its memory will be zeroed and the odds are better that it will finish the task before stumbling.

This is all just a guess of mine, but since I'm coding for decades myself I must say that I'm pretty sure that it is a good one... :-)

Roxio says that they "found something" but can't give a schedule when it's going to get fixed (in Toast 9).

can you make a disc image from the Tivo file?

Not sure what that means. I drag the TIVO files to the Toast screen and press the button which converts them and burns them. This used to work. The conversion part seems to complete OK, but the part that writes to the disk always fails, seemingly near the end with the error message.

Near the burn button there is a button that reads "Save as Disc Image". This essentially creates a DVD on your hard drive rather than on a disc. When the disc image is done you can mount it by selecting it (the file ends with .toast) using the Image File setting in the Copy window. When it is mounted it can be previewed in DVD Player. If all is okay you can burn the disc image to a DVD disc by clicking the burn button in the Copy window.

There often are times when creating a disc image first solves problems when trying to burn video DVDs.
