Cd Spin Doctor Crashing

addy

Question

Ok, just bought Toast 9, specifically for spin doctor to record vinyl and track mark mix cd's.

very dissapointed..... spin doctor just freezes and drops out when track marking and recording....

re-installed, added update to 9.02...still the same.....this really does not seem stable... :angry2:

Thank you for your suggestion. I am not sure I entirely agree with the disk access theory; it makes sense, yet I can do the same operation (move a slider to fast forward) in iTunes and I do not crash. I would think the same disk access function is in play in that operation as well. Be that as it may, there could be other factors at play in Spin Doctor (you did mention a general instability).

I know I've used the wrong terms to describe this because I'm only a software user and know little about the technology itself. The problem in my opinion isn't with the Mac reading the disc but with Spin Doctor caching or releasing data as the scroll bar is used to rapidly advance over a lengthy recording. You seem to describe it better in your comments below.

I will try your method for marking the tracks. The issue I face in doing this is that there is no silence between tracks; I am splitting long mixes where one song segues into the next, so it is crucial that I can listen to the music as I edit to be sure I am where I want to be when I mark my track. So, if I can monitor the tracks as I split them, it seems I will be able to accomplish my goal.

My process should work even without noticeable gaps. The idea is to create smaller segments for the scroll bar to span. Just put markers in the places that adequately lets you to audition the zone where you expect the track should start or end. Also, if you have something that tells you the length of the tracks you can enter the time manually in the right-side panel.

I do still think that you should be able to perform the operation the way I was doing it and I think Roxio needs to address the stability issue. Even Addy provided a panic dump I do not see Roxio's "Mac guru" rushing in to tell us that they are looking into the problem.

This problem is easily replicated and Roxio should be doing something to prevent it occurring. At a minimum, they should be looking at buffer size and activity flow through same to allow the program to better handle the disk access problem.

Very good feedback. Spin Doctor is developed by a third party company for Roxio and I wish sometimes that it was a higher priority for that developer. Still, the version bundled with Toast 9 is a big step from what was bundled with Toast 8 so I give the developer applause for that. I'm taking that as an encouraging sign it will continue to improve. I'm confident your feedback is being passed along.

It seems there is a general dissatisfaction with them on this forum. Curious. I wish I'd come here before I bought my copy of Toast. C'est la vie.

No, you have it wrong. Everybody is happy here. Seriously, I do get weary at times pitching in to help here when users are frazzled trying to get accomplished what they want to do. Maybe it's just my years using these applications that provides me an inner sense of what not to do to, but I rarely have difficulty with Toast, Spin Doctor or the other bundled applications (now that Motion Pictures is thankfully gone from the package). Sometimes I've been invited to beta test a new version of Toast and I can make it crash in 100 different ways yet when it is released it only crashes in 10 ways and I've found an effective workaround for nine of them. I'm one of those "glass half full" people who are impressed that these applications work as well as they do (particularly given what I've seen in the past).

I'm unclear what you mean by marking tracks using the slider. The only ways I know to mark tracks are either selecting automatic and then correcting those selections (which I think is a pain so I don't do it that way) or by choosing one of the two options for manual track marking in the large waveform window. The first option is for dragging across the waveform to mark the tracks and the second option is to make a single click where the track ends. The latter creates a track from the end point of the previous track and is very handy. These two options are selected with the buttons just above "Track Mode" in the upper left corner of the waveform window.

I don't know why the developer is allowed to fail to provide documentation for Spin Doctor. It's very unprofessional and irritating. There are some knowledgebase articles you can search for in the main Roxio support page. Otherwise it is trial and error and/or posting questions here looking for tips.

Tsantee, thank you for your comments on this. I really appreciate it. Let me explain a bit more...

What I mean by 'marking tracks using the slider' is:

1. I start playing the music.

2. I drag the slider at the top of the window (essentially, I am fast-forwarding through the music) slowly to the right until I get to the end of one song, then I mark the corresponding place in the wave form.

3. I drag the slider to the end of the next song and then again mark the wave form. I would say that I am using the single-click method to mark the track point.

The problem is that, as I drag the slider slowly to the right, the program freezes up and then crashes. I am new at this and the documentation says... (well don't get me started on that).

Is there is a better [correct] way to do it?

I understand how you say you do it, but if you do it that way is there a way to listen to the music live to be sure I am marking the right place? I am trying to split mixes I have downloaded as one large track.

Thanks again.

As far as I can tell this program (CDSD) is absolute crap. If it did what it claims it would be one of my favorites - but it doesn't. I have posted here and searched the web for any clues but all I can find is Mac people complaining that this program is absolute crap.

I have started a support process with Roxio, they asked for screen shots of the crashes and problems and then never got back to me. It's (in your best Fat Bastard accent) CRAP.

And no response on how to get a refund as I only upgraded to Toast 9 for this program.

Crap.

If you bought Toast 9 as a download from Roxio then you have 30 days to request a refund. There may be some mention of this in your purchase confirmation email.

I think what's happening when you scroll the slider is some kind of disk access problem. As you move the slider the audio is being read from the hard drive and as you move it quickly there is a delay waiting to catch up. Spin Doctor used to be horribly unstable and now it much better but still delicate. Your workflow isn't going to work reliably.

So here's how I do it.

First I adjust the zoom control so I won't have to do too much scrolling with the middle wave form yet I can still see where there may be silence between tracks. Using the one-click track marker I select the approximate places where I believe tracks should end. I save the file at this point (and whenever I complete a fine edit (a habit developed from my experience with early versions of Spin Doctor).

Now I can select individual tracks to appear in the upper slider. Click on the up-and-down arrow at the left of the top slider and a popup appears where you can select individual tracks. Zoom the wave form to a fairly large size so you can clearly see breaks in the audio. Move the slider to the start or end of the track to audition the audio. Hold the cursor over the track marker in the lower waveform to fine tune the start or end point. Note: you can also fine tune tracks by entering the start and stop times in the right-side window when the Details tab is selected at the top.

Select the adjacent track and, if desired, choose the appropriate align command from the Edit menu (or the keyboard shortcut) to match the start of end time with a previous or following track.

Hopefully this workflow will meet your needs. Maybe you can add your own tips for how to make this process work quickly while avoiding some of Spin Doctor's vulnerabilities.

OK, so now i have removed all Toast 9 files from computer..(macbook pro one month old), from pref, library etc and emptied trash.

Reinstalled from the update 9.02.

Now Spin doctor will not open from open file menu...will only open from Import new file...then i can go to open file from the File menu, then it opens up the waveform....very odd.

Now it appears more stable as i have trackmarked two cd's.

One glitch is that if i put the album name on the tracks in Spin Doctor, then export to iTunes, it looses the album name, but keeps the artist.

I have spoken to a friend with spin doctor 9.02 and he has EXACTLY the same issues...so it is not my computer....

It seems there is a general dissatisfaction with them on this forum. Curious. I wish I'd come here before I bought my copy of Toast. C'est la vie.

I think that's the nature of all computer-related forums. General users only make posts on the forum when they encounter problems.

I bought Toast 9.0.2/Spin Doctor for the same reason and am equally disappointed. A request to Roxio for help has yielded nothing so far.

A question to Addy: I assume you trying to mark tracks by using the slider? Have you ever succeeded to mark any more than one track? I cannot. That is what I have been doing and it crashes repeatedly. I did mark tracks "arbitrarily" based on the wave-form without using the slider and that did work though that is not an acceptable solution. Just curious. I really need that feature to work.

Also, is there any place with detailed info on using Spin Doctor equivalent to what is available for Toast?
