Audio And Video Out Of Sync

Mark Hicks

Question

I have been using EMC 10 with no problem on my old PC. I recently bought a new machine with a Quad Core processor, moved to Vista, 2GB of RAM, 500 HDD and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video card. I used to get problems with stuttery video on my old machine so had already set the rendering to software.

Now, I've many times in the past encoded MPEGs with EMC 10 and had no audio problems. When encoding, the preview window would show grey circles and say MPEG-2. When I encoded my first disk on the new machine, the video began to show in the preview window for a few seconds before flicking back to the grey circles screen.

When I check my burned DVD, the audio leaps out of sync with the video at exactly this point. I would really love some help with this as I have been happily using the software for months and love it!

Many thanks in anticpation!

I should add by the way that I have already burned it to an image file and loaded it in an emulated drive with exactly the same result

Thanks

Thanks Jim - Apologies for the double post by the way but I was unsure where it should go!

Well I updated the video card driver - (you were right - it was well out of date!) but that didn't work.

I then tried to reduce my hardware acceleration - apparently the new driver won't allow me to do this!

Any more suggestions anyone?

Does this happen with multiple MPEG-based productions on your new machine or just one in particular?

The file was one MPEG which ran out to 6GB and was being burned onto a Verbatim DVD+R DL. I've been doing this for a year or so on my old machine with absolutely no problems.

What I did last night was to split the MPEG down into hour long chunks and then add them to MyDVD as one movie = same problem.

In the end I took them into MyDVD as separate movies, told the first button to play all the files on the menu and cut the buttons to the other movies. This worked fine but of course I now get pauses when the movies change (in the middle of a Formula 1 Grand Prix that's really annoying - although not as annoying as the sound being out of sync)

What I think is happening is that with a large MPEG, it takes the encoder some time to "notice" that it's an MPEG, hence the preview window showing the first few seconds of the film, before the fact that its an MPEG registers and the familiar grey screen with concentric circles appears. At this point, the sound "hiccups" and is then slightly out of sync for the rest of the movie.

I'd still like to solve this properly rather than work around it so if anyone has any advice that would be great. Thanks to one and all for your help so far.

Update your video card drivers.

After you do that try it in both Software as well as Hardware Render and see which one works best on your PC.

Another symptom of problems with Hardware render is a blurring effect in scenes with panning or rapid motion.

Good to hear from you Jim - I took my system out of the box last Friday so the drivers should be OK but I will have a look when I get home.

I tried burning a DVD with the hardware rendering option - this gave me the slight "juddering" issue (but not as bad as with my previous machine. Would reducing the hardware acceleration help do you think?

No, the drivers were as current as the Disc Image the manufacture used to Image your HD with… That Image probably passed their OC inspection last January!

In busy months PC manufactures are pushing 1 million PCs out the door each month. That doesn't give the elves much time to personally build each one.

The design and manufacturing process is LOCKED early on and stays that way!

Give the reducing of the harware acceleration a shot, and see what happens.
