Videowave Locks Up

John Oss

Question

I'm trying to work with VideoWave in EMC 10 Suite, editing a VOB movie (to remove commercials). System is a Dell 9100 with Pentium D 2.8GHz dual processors, 3 GB memory, running XP Pro SP2.

Every time I go into trim mode, the program locks up and I have to use Task Mgr to get out, losing previous work. Occasionally it freezes when I try to enter trim mode, but usually I can get in and move the locator bar or play a couple of times searching for a specific location; sometimes I can even set a start or end point. But after 3-5 actions, everything freezes. When I shut it down with Task Manager, it usually says it's waiting for a response from me.

I've also gotten a lockup in Copy & Convert trying to do the same thing.

I've seen the posts about doing a clean install - this is a problem for me. First, I don't want to get rid of all my older Roxio/Sonic programs. I much prefer the more flexible backup and faster speed in basic tasks in Sonic Digital Media LE to those in EMC 10 Suite. Also, when I try to run the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility, I get an Error 1714 on msicuu.exe. (Microsoft tells me that I can't get this error on XP!!!). I have reinstalled EMC10 twice with no improvement.

I'm getting very frustrated with Roxio. Other software at this price level doesn't require this kind of effort to install. All I want to do is edit VOB movies - in fact, I hadn't intended to get the entire suite in the first place. If a trial version had been available, I probably wouldn't have. I'm close to junking EMC10, writing the cost off, and getting a video editor that will work.

Is this will multiple .vob files or just this one in particular?

You obviously have something fouled up in your computer, if you are getting that MS error message.

First, try updating the drivers for your video card. What video card or chip do you have?

Second, get rid of any malware/spyware you have on your computer with a free version of AdAware or Spybot.

Third, run a virus check.

Fourth, shut down any programs that you have running at startup, via msconfig.

Grandpa,

Video chip is Radeon X300. I updated it (it did need updating). I've been running both SpyBot and Ad-Aware and run weekly virus scans - latest last night. Haven't tried shutting down all startup software but am not having problems elsewhere. Last night I edited the same VOB completely in about an hour (including learning) with MPEG Video Wizard download. I'll try the startup shutdown but shouldn't have to.

Tom: I had earlier problems with a different VOB file, but not as bad as this. After several lockups I got through it

I don't remember how to do it, but disable hardware acceleration, in the Radeon software. The X300 has had problems with the software, and I think that that is the solution.
