Wants Old Version Of Norton

John7590

Question

The installer to update from Version 10 to Version 10.1 wants to install Norton Anti-Virus 2005, a version of Norton that predates my computer(!), before it will continue installing Version 10.1. In order to install Norton Anti-Virus 2005, I'd have to uninstall my Norton 360.

What gives?

It's a mistake by Roxio leaving a dummy variable behind which causes the problem with registry cleaners and versions 9 and 10.0. This problem shows with any registry cleaners worth their salt, and isn't a Norton fault. As far as I can see Roxio have corrected their mistake in 10.1

We had a problem discussed here within the past day which was caused by Norton 360 v2, and solved by the member reverting back to Norton 360 v1.

It seems that when humans make software, nobody is exempt from mistakes.

Some like it hot, some like it cold <_< I have been using Norton's products way before Symantec got involved and since also. I have used Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Internet Security programs for years now and I have "NEVER" had one of them stop a program from running including any of Roxio's EMC programs. However, I don't play with the other Norton products that are on the market (i.e. Norton 360).

As far as using any Reg Cleaners, you better know what the program is doing before you start playing around with it, or sure enough it will eventually bite you.

Thank you for providing the first root cause explanation of the problem that I have seen rather than providing the usual unsupported guesses seen as it relates to this problem. I stopped using registry cleaners a long time ago, but your explanation might help others that do use them and are encountering this problem.

Not sure, but are you sure you have to install the Norton 2005 ?? Or is that just an option ? Also, be aware that there are several people that have posted on the forum that have been having lots of problems with NOrton 360 and EMC 10. Just a thought ?

You need to delete the Norton exe file from the temp files that EMC 10 uses to install the software. EMC 10 contains nothing that has to do with Norton, and an install of Norton, evidently leaves the exe file in the temp files, and somehow, the EMC install file, activates that exe file also.

I saw this, somewhere in these forums, earlier this year.

EMC 10 does work well with Norton 360 and they(Roxio) want you to get rid of the Norton. As I told them I would get rid of Roxio long before I would get of Norton.

Is Norton 2005 even supported any more?

I don't know who 'they' are that told you to get rid of Norton. The only advice regarding Norton here was to be VERY careful before using the One Button Cleanup as that wrecked certain registry entries that EMC 9 and 10 depended on.

Personally, I swore by Norton for years and always made sure that was the first thing installed in a re-format and re-install of the OS - nowadays I wouldn't touch it with a forty foot barge pole. Ever since Symantec took over, it has become a predator in that if it doesn't like something, it wipes it without asking (no matter what that something is) and they will never own up to the fact that their software wrecked another. At least in times past they would patch fast to cure a problem.

I now run a dedicated anti-virus with no frills, my firewall is hardware (in the router) and I use Ashampoo Utilities (think old, reliable, pre-Symantec Norton)

I got rid of Norton's a year or so ago. Total memory & resource hog IMHO. I can't speak for the latest 360, but it is well known that some registry cleaners - including Nortons - remove entries in the registry that EMC uses. This is clearly a fault of Nortons and any other software that removes stuff they shouldn't.

I seriously doubt Roxio has ever told anyone to 'get rid of Nortons'.

Several people on these boards have said that 10.1 fixes the problem with Reg Cleaners, I do not know my self if it does. I did not have that problem ; due all the noise about it I turned the Norton Reg Cleaner off.

You are right that Norton is a total memory & resource hog.
