Lightscribe Burns With Lines In Emc 10

PMFWrangler

Question

Using the EMC 10 Label Creator to burn a LightScribe disk fails with the disc having concentric lines burned in it. I am using the proper disk, media, etc. This previously worked fine when using the preloaded Sonic Express Labeler program that came on the hp Pavilion notebook. That Sonic software was uninstalled when EMC 10 was installed.

Is there a trick or work around that will let me burn LightScribe discs?

Thanks

I'll try to answer several posts here.

I do have the latest LightScribe software installed, 1.14.19.1 I did install the "LightScribe Simple Labeler" program after updating to the 1.14.19.1 software/drivers did not help my issue with EMC 10 Label Creator. I can create text only labels with LightScribe Simple Labeler and did indeed put the text on top of the circular black (or dark grey) band created by EMC 10. It actually looked kind of cool.

EMC 10 was purchased online and downloaded a couple of weeks ago. The Sonic Express Labeler that was previously installed came bundled with this notebook that was purchased about 22 months ago.

I have a screen shot showing the graphic I am trying to place on the disc along with the print preview; here goes my fist hosted image link attempt.

Screen shot with print preview

By the way, I used to design optical disk drives (Laser Magnetic Storage International, then LMSI, then Philips LMS, now Plasmon LMS). These were mostly Write Once Read Many (WORM) drives that were used for archival storage on 12-inch or 5.25-inch glass disks. One of the engineers there modified the Read/Write channel to put a dot matrix representation of a photograph on the discs recording surface. This was 13 or 14 years ago! He recorded a photograph of the design team onto the discs. Wish I had one of those now!

Alright, let's see if the post I put in for the screen shot works. Thanks for the help!

On a whim???? That is the first thing you should have checked! See post 5 of this thread.

Had you done that, you would have saved yourself some stress. Still, it is good to see that you are good to go.

Please note that I could find nothing in the post 5 tips & tricks that mentioned using an LSS version that is over one year down rev; and post 11 notes going to lightscribe.com for the latest LSS revision. I had started this post on the users forum after Roxio Tech Support made sure I had updated to LSS rev 1.14.19.1 (which of course does not work on my system) so I am not sure why you mentioned I should have checked that first.

Anyway, I have enjoyed using CineMagic and VideoWave to create my first DVD complete with overlapping stills, music, and slow motion sequences. I created a Cinemagic video first and then "reverse engineered" it to figure out tracks, overlays, transitions, and so on.

Thanks again to everyone who has looked at this thread and offered help. Roxio Tech Support did not figure out either of the problems I ran in to so I can honestly say the best support comes through the user forum!

Well that certainly is black -- I'd have to say mine was dark gray compared to that.

You'll never go wrong w/ a clean install like Jim suggests. Why not try it, check out the lightscribe preview & report back.

Tom

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I appreciate the support everyone has given me in this forum.

I did the clean install as recommended and had no change in the print preview. Tech Support did finally escalate my ticket to second level and reported back that this is a "known compatibility issue" with hp printers and Label Creator. This seems odd to me as the pre-installed Sonic Express Labeler (Labelmaker?) that came on the PC worked fine (meaning I could burn LightSribe discs with images and text).

Aren't Roxio and Sonic one and the same? I am wondering if I can install the older Sonic Express Labeler program and keep EMC 10 programs.

What do you think?

How does the disc appear in the "preview" screen before you burn it? I burned one last night w/ a black preview screen and it burned -- black! I monkeyed around with a different template & images, and the lightscribe preview screen looked good, as did my finished product.

Well, well. On a whim I downloaded the last LSS update for my notebook (an hp Pavilion DV9009NR) from the hp support web sight, installed it, and Voila! I can write images and text on LightScribe discs now! The Print Preview works as expected. The hp web sight LSS version is 1.10.13.1 for my notebook.

Who'd a thunk it?

Make sure that you don't select the LightScribe template. I believe it is only a text template.

Select any normal template, do whatever you want, to it, then select your LightScribe burner to "print".

Syrallas: Not to get too far off, but what do you mean by "black"?

Got pictures???

Jim,

Much like when you bring a car into the dealership & it is no longer making the noise its been making for the past two weeks, all of the images now preview fine so you & everyone else out there will think I'm crazy.

Basically the preview screen showed all of the disc area to be dark gray, even though the template included images that looked fine on the template. I burned it anyway (because I had used a template that previously burned w/ success and just deleted the old and then brought in new images), and my lightscribe disc was solid gray all around, just like the preview.

I'll check periodically over the next few weeks to see if the gremlin returns and, if so, re-post. I didn't update any drivers on my pc or anything, so, as w/ many things in my life, I can't quite explain what happened.

I appreciate all of the replies. I have tried creating "blank" projects and styles but always have the same result. I have used the LightScribe features on this PC before the Roxio EMC 10 was installed; it was an older version of Sonic Express Labeler that came preinstalled on this hp Pavilion notebook. Unfortunately, the Roxio EMC 10 installation required that Sonic software to be uninstalled. To get by with text only for now I have installed the simple label maker program from LightScribe.com and can put text on the discs.

I have a screen shot of the black ring shown in Print Preview; how do I add that to the posts?

Thanks,

Jim

You keep talking about "before" and the "software" you used to have but what LightScribe software/drivers do you have now???

If you haven't been to LightScribe.com and installed the LightScribe drivers it will never work!

And after you install their software you can use their program with one of your failed discs to practice on. With LightScribe discs, you can rewrite the discs until every inch is used up.

Edit: the latest is update is July 30, 2008!!! – 1.14.19.1

The preview screen indeed shows black and prints that way on the LightScribe disc. I tried every other template, checked and unchecked things, added images, added text, added squares and so on but never could get the print preview to show anything but black. It is interesting that the black "ring" is always the area between two blue "border" circles that show up on the project before the preview.

As Jim suggests, read the post he pinned in the T&T section talking about making these lightscribe discs.

When you say "The black "ring" is always the area between two blue "border" circles that show up on the project before the preview" I am a litte puzzled. It happens with all of the EMC 10 templates? Make sure you play around w/ all of them. When you do, do the images you add appear fine. BTW: Are you adding images or just text?

Don't burn if the preview is bad, just come back here and we'll try and work it out.

As for me, I had a template that had worked in the past, but earlier this week when I used new images, for some reason, unknown to me, they didn't "take" -- they looked fine on the template I was working on, but as I noted above, the preview looked black, and that's what counts.
