Reading Media Incorrectly

The drive's firmware is responsible for recognizing media and passing that along to Popcorn. I can think of three possible things to try. One is to trash the Popcorn plist file in your user>library>preferences folder and relaunch Popcorn. Another is to check if a firmware update is available for your drive. A third is to try with a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc because it is the most likely to be supported by any burner.
