Taiwan market: Top-three local brands, Lite-On, BenQ, Asustek, Sony, Pioneer have over 80% of DVD burner sales

Jimmy Hsu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DigiTimes.com [Friday 7 April 2006]

Lite-On IT, BenQ, Asustek Computer, the top-three local makers of own-brand DVD burners, along with Sony and Pioneer have secured more than 80% of the sales volume of DVD burners in the Taiwan market since the beginning of this year, according to sales statistics from each company and local retail channels.

The sales volume of DVD burners of all types in Taiwan averages 100,000-110,000 units a month, consisting of 70,000-80,000 independently sold through retail outlets and 30,000 sold bundled with PCs, local retail channels pointed out. Liteon (the brand name for Lite-On IT), BenQ (also a brand name) and Asus (the brand name for Asustek) each sell 20,000-22,000 DVD burners a month, while Sony and Pioneer each sell 15,000-18,000 units monthly, the channels indicated.

NEC, LG, TEAK and second-tier local brands, which include MSI (Micro-Star International) and 4KUS, as well as a few less well known local brands are competing for the remaining market share of less than 20%.

In the meantime, sales of Combo drives (CD-RW + DVD-ROM) have been falling quickly since February this year due to fast replacement by DVD burners, whose prices have continually slipped.
