Copying Dvds

Venki

Question

I am trying to make copies of a DVD on a Windows XP with one single DVD-RW drive. After reading the source, when I replace it with a blank DVD-R disk, it asked me to select the burn speed but the list box is empty.

Has anybody experienced this issue? How can I solve it?

It's an extra step but I would copy the dvd to your hard drive first as an image file (ISO) then when complete, take out the dvd and put in a blank dvd and then burn that ISO file to disc. One this file is on your hard drive, you can make as many copies as you want without going back and forth swapping out discs.

BTW, this is a DVD that was made for me. I own the content! I am not pirating any movie!

I also tried it on a another computer that has a DVD-R and a DVD-RW drive. I run into the same issue with that computer.

Are you saying that the only way to make a copy is to create an image on the computer and then burn disks of that? If that be the case, why would COPY DVDs give me a window to choose a Source and Destination drives?

I always give that caveat - you would be surprised the number of posts that there have been about copying commercial DVDs ;)

I suggested that you try doing it to .iso first for two reasons

1: to see if it will actually work

and

2: that is what the program will do anyway (you're just doing it manually)

That way we can see if there is a problem with the reading or the writing

I have one more data point.

It may have to do with the blank media. I have a Sony that says "DVD-R 8x 4.7 GB / 120 min". I also have a COMP USA "DV-R 4.7 GB 120 min"

I am able to make copies if I use Sony. The write speed is set to 6 and it makes the copies. But when I use the Comp USA blanks, the write speed says "No common speeds available".

The Comp USA DVD box says upto 12x.
