Trouble With AVCHD Files

adara

Question

Still testing, but after a quick editing of a 2 minute 1920x1080 movie from my Panasonic HDC-SD5 there is noticeable loss in quality after saving even in the highest quality BluRay format. There is loss of detail, like a blur filter is applied, and there is also loss of colour. Totally unacceptable. Although viewable on the PC (with Cyberlink PowerDVD, the Roxio CinePlayer crashes), the resulting DVD is not compatible with my standalone Sharp BluRay player.

In the other thread you mention waiting for a 'lossless' editor. You'll be waiting for a long time since there is no such thing. ANY time you edit, the video must be re-encoded and therefore 'some' loss in quality. Very few editors can 'smart' render AVCHD. I only know of two and those aren't 'full featured' editors.

For the absolute best Hidef quality from C2009, you need to 'output to file' using Videowave and choose the Blu-ray SP template. That will give you 1920x1080i @25Mbps bitrate.

AVCHD (MPEG 4) uses a much higher compression than HDV (MPEG 2). The Blu-ray SP template uses HDV which should give you the best possible quality.

Thank you for your reply. I'm using Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 for playback. I'm also using KMPlayer and Nero ShowTime. For some strange reason CinePlayer ignores the *.mts files that open OK with the other players. The PC is a 3GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, Vista 32bit, Nvidia GeForce8500GT, Philips 22' monitor.

Some Blu-ray players can not play back AVCHD on DVD. Several users have posted that the discs work fine on PlayStation 3.

What are you using to play the disc back on the computer? On my PC, the AVCHD on DVD playback fine with CinePlayer.
